Talking of performances...
...has anybody caught any good ones of late? I realise that we'll be discussing TV and cinema more than stage but nonetheless...

I saw a very good performance from rachel Weiss in Constantine - not a great movie and a poor script, but she managed to show her ability, even out-shining the oddly gorgeous Tilda Swinton :)

Re: Merchant of Venice
I saw the newish Pacino version last week and thought he was very, very good. He "Al"-ed it up, of course, but he did display a massive range of emotions from careful Jewry through affable banker (Banker) to outright vengeful b*stard and finally humiliated mouse, with great poise and sympathy.

Well worth a watch, and also unintentionally hilarious for Jeremy Irons' rubbish depiction of the Merchant in question.

Here's a thread: Fave Pacino performance??

Start it up dude ;)

I like Pacino, though latterly he's seemed very hammy - i'll keep an eye out for this on DVD.

Interestingly, I cannot abide Irons so an abject performance from him cheers me somewhat :lol

Re: Merchant of Venice
I liked him in Heat, but that's probably coz McNab shot the action scenes so they all looked good in it ;-)

Seriously tho, the Shylock's gotta be up there, he does bluster thru it rather well.

Re: Merchant of Venice
By far my favourite role of his must be Sonny in Dog Day Afternoon

www.imdb.com/title/tt0072890/

Such variety as you've already mentioned - the whole range from a young actor at the top of his game in an excellent film.

Re: Constantine
Out of my head please LaHibou,

I've just seen Constantine.

Now here's where we part company.

I saw no redeeming quality in any of the acting, (even tried to get a pubescent crush on Keanu...nope).

I really wanted to like it. I tried, I'm not a movie snob. Just wanted a good story and maybe a little scare - and a big no on both counts.

I will admit to almost changing my crush from Keanu to either of the girls though...

Re: Constantine
I agree, the film wasn't much cop - ghastly script, especially when you consider the pure gold that is the source material, but I think you are being a wee bit harsh on the female leads - both are very talented women and let's face it, they didn't have much to work with here - Tilda's lines were cheesy and Rachel had a male lead so wooden it was like somebody was throwing a chair about the set :lol

I even thought Peter Stomare did a very good job with poor lines, as the tar-footed Lucifer, though I think i'll stick with the comix from now on ;)
