Just the FAQ - READ THIS BEFORE POSTING QUESTIONS!!
March 22nd, 2006
Hello Everyone,
Well, as promised, here is the first interation of the ezboard –> Yuku FAQ. I’ve blogged it here, but will be implementing another page on the site in the next week or so. Until then, I’ll eidt this post with more Q&A as they emerge.
Please read this before reading the FAQs:
Before we get started with the FAQs I’d like to ask you to do yourself a favor. Please read the FAQs and the help and lobby forums before posting questions and when you do post questions make sure that they are posed in the right place and they are original questions. By that I mean, questions regarding ezboard and Yuku should be posted on ezboard and questions about how to use Yuku should be posted on Yuku. Please don’t post ezboard questions on Yuku. I’ve instructed the CS team not to answer ezboard questions on Yuku and vice-versa I hope you understand.
Also, we are seeing ten or more people asking the same questions in one or more forums. We are here to answer your questions and concerns, and we are happy to do it. We know that every person who asks a question expects an answer. I know I do! Repetitive questions multiply our workload and make it harder for us to get to answering your original question. So please help yourself and read the FAQ before posting a question and be sure that when you do post a question it is posted on the right site.
Finally, the FAQs on this page are the official answers to your questions. We will update the FAQs several times a week and will direct you to them if you post a question that has been answered in the FAQ.
OK, thanks for reading my public service announcement. Now let’s get to the FAQs:
Q: I am confused by some of the names of things in Yuku.
A: Some of the names have changed, here’s a quick guide to the changes:
ezboard name……….Yuku name
board or community….domain
category (to organize forums)….folder
emoticons…………..smilies
personal photo………avatar
user levels…………groups
on ezboard, each username was a separate account, and you could link up to 5 accounts if you were an ezsupporter.
On Yuku, your email address is your account. You log in with email and password, rather than with username and password. Your usernames are called profiles, and you can still have 5 names (profiles) on one email account. You can switch between these names (profiles) without logging in and out. This is available to everyone on Yuku, on ezboard it was only available to ezsupporters.
Q: Will my board lose all it’s posts and members when it is migrated?
A: No it won’t lose them, your topics, posts, and members will be copied over to Yuku. Topics will be copied into their correct forums, not all mixed together.
Q: Will my board’s gold be transferred to the Yuku board? Do I have to pay again? What about my community chest, will I lose that?
A: Any remaining gold time on your board will be transferred to Yuku, and your community chest balance will also be transferred. You won’t lose any gold time or your chest balance. We will require that gold boards have at least 6 months of gold left at the time of migrating to Yuku, this is to ensure that we have time to build the new subscription engine. If It’s not built by the time your migrated board is up for gold renewal, we will extend it’s gold for free until we get the subscription engine built.
Q: Will the Yuku equivalent of board Gold cost more than EZboard’s? Will the equivalent of EZsupporter cost more?
A: We have not set any prices yet, but we expect gold prices to be the same as ezboard for now. We will give you plenty of notice if there is any changes in costs. There will be no ezsupporter or equivalent in Yuku.
Q: Will my ezboard’s customizations be copied to Yuku?
A: Yuku boards also have a custom HTML section, like ezboard. But the classes for CSS are different names, and javascripts will be screened in Yuku for security reasons. So we will not be importing custom HTML because there are so many differences between the 2 formats that importing the custom HTML could break the Yuku board. We will have a wide variety of pre-made skins to use, and you can make your own just like in ezboard, or modify the pre-made skins. We will also have plenty of help and tutorials for people to get started making skins and modifying skins.
Q: What about cool javascript hacks on my ezboard like quickreply and text replacement for who’s online? Will I lose all those?
A: We are building the most popular javascript hacks as standard features available to all boards. You won’t need to do it yourself with javascript anymore. Quickreply is already built and all the labels in who’s online will be able to be customized, i.e. changing “viewers” to “lurkers” or whatever text you choose. (that feature is not available yet) Many other popular javascripts are also being developed as features and we will also allow users to submit their own javascript modifications, which will be screened for security risks and then (if they are secure) added as features.
Q: Will my custom emoticons be imported to Yuku?
A: Yes, they will be imported and have the same keyboard shortcuts as your ezboard.
Q: Will Yuku boards be formatted similarly to ezboard (with links on front page to enter forum)? I don’t like the blog view.
A: Yes, the main page of a board (called a domain on Yuku) looks very similar to ezboard with a table that lists the forums, the forum names are links to enter the forum, and there is an optional forum description below the forum name. Forums are organized into categories just like on ezboard. (these are called folders on Yuku, because a viewer can expand and collapse them). example: lobby.Yuku.com/directory/
Blogs are just an additional feature which you don’t have to use if you don’t like it.
Q: Will Yuku have MBA boards? Will my MBA ezboard become public when it’s copied to Yuku?
A: Yuku does have MBA boards and forums, and ezboards which are MBA will stay MBA when they are copied. They will not become public. Additionally, there are MBA enhancements like a more customizable MBA message, custom accept and deny messages, you can ask applicants to tell something about themself on the application form, view their profile, etc.
Q: Will Yuku have private and invisible forums? Will my invisible forums become open to everyone when my board is copied to Yuku?
A: Yuku does have private forums now and invisible forums are in the features list to be developed before any board migration starts. We will not copy ezboards to Yuku UNTIL Yuku has invisible forums. Your private content will remain private. Your invisible forums will remain invisible.
Q: Will Yuku have chatrooms?
A: Yuku will have chat, that is on our features list to build. It’s not there yet but we plan to have it.
Q: Will my ezboard keep it’s same name when it is migrated to Yuku?
A: Your board will keep it’s name and it will be part of a shorter, more easy to remember url.
For example if your ezboard url was p079.ezboard.com/bmusic, your Yuku url will be music.Yuku.com
Of course you can change your board’s display name on Yuku just like you can on ezboard, so if you later want to add discussion about movies, the display name can be “music and movies”, but the url will remain music.Yuku.com.
Q: What will be copied from a person’s profile when it’s migrated to Yuku?
A: We will copy your avatar (personal photo), post count, bio, hobbies, contact info (email and instant messenger), location, recent posts, etc. There will be privacy settings for these just like ezboard and your privacy setting will also be copied. Profile skins will not be copied to Yuku, for the same reason we cannot import board CSS. The classes are different and importing your ezboard profile CSS could break your Yuku profile. But there will be a wide library of pre-made profile skins to use and you can make your own or modify the pre-made skins, just like in ezboard. There will also be plenty of help and tutorials for users wanting to make profile skins or modify skins.
Q: Will Yuku have private messages?
A: Yes! It has them now and there’s no limit on how many you can send per day (like non-supporters had in ezboard).
Q: Will Yuku have foreign language formats?
A: Yuku doesn’t have languages other than English available yet, but we do plan to eventually have that ability and to allow users to submit foreign language translations to add more options than just the 3 foreign languages that ezboard currently supports.
Q: What about local accounts? Will Yuku have those?
A: Yuku will not allow new local accounts to be registered, but existing ezboard local accounts will be migrated to Yuku. They will work just like global accounts and can post at any Yuku domain. For example, let’s say someone has the local account “joe” at the ezboard “music”. On the domain music, their name will display as just “joe” on their posts. On all other Yuku domains, their name will display as joe@music, to differentiate them from the global name “joe”. If the imported local user never posts at any other domains, they won’t notice any change.
Q: What about usernames that haven’t made a post in a while? Will they be migrated to Yuku? There’s a name I want on ezboard and it’s never posted!
A: We are planning a username cleanup to remove the dead accounts that have not been used in a long time (in some cases, never used). There will be plenty of advance messaging before we do this and instructions how to keep your account in the “active” group so it won’t be purged. This will free up many of the good names that were taken in the early days of ezboard and abandoned.
Q: What about boards that have had little or no activity for a while? Will they be copied to Yuku?
A: We are doing a dead board purge starting on April 3, 2006. This will delete unused non-gold boards to free up board names and to reduce the amount of dead data we copy to Yuku. To prevent your non-gold archive board from being purged, just make sure it has a recent post. Gold boards don’t need to do anything- we will not purge gold boards.
So, that’s all for tonight. We are actively reading the help and other forums on ezboard and Yuku and will be adding your questions to our FAQs on both ezboard and Yuku on an ongoing basis.
Thanks for tuning in and we look forward to hearing your original questions and reading your great suggestions.
Do we want the board to be moved? Do we want things here to be archived? Should we put the board to rest?
I know I don't check in here often. I do feel a responsibility for the archives here. I don't want to see them graffitied or really, abandoned. Would it be better to delete the board altogether?
I suppose it's a case of 'we tried', and let the place go really. Sad, and there's nothing i'd like better than to see the place with some life, but we've been saying that for years now...
I've spent a great deal of time reading over this entire forum (and copying/pasting many of the best posts). It was wonderful reading some of Dads words, but really there were so many talented people here.
I don't understand what happened. Why did Nous abandon the site? Why did everyone just stop writing? There was a lot of great stuff by Falderal, DJ, Shaz, LaHibou, Flutter, Keld.....so many people. Surely you all didn't "dry up" at the same time.
Is everyone/anyone writing at another site now? So much of the prose and poetry was simply wonderful! The way that you would all feed off of each other was amazing; and I don't see why it can't be that good again, if someone would just start writing the others would be inspired also (assuming they even come here to look anymore)
Did everyone just lose interest in writing? I can't believe that.
I know I don't have a vote in the matter, but if I did I wouldn't want you to delete everything. Just leave it as is to either fade away some day or live on as long as ezboard keeps it on their servers.

Re: the board
Of course you have a say in the matter POC. You get your dad's proxy vote. I miss the very things you're talking about.
I will continue to watch out for it, at least. I will delete obnoxious spam and such. Who knows...maybe the right wind will blow one day and people will wander back here.
Re: the board
Well, times change but at least there's still a presence here, and I for one enjoy my sojourns here on the occasions I have a web connection.
Re: the board
Well, i'll probably keep checking in as long as i'm online, which is likely to be for a long time to come - CCVulture and I will always have a verse or a pic to post from time to time, but I do admit I am as mystified as POC as to the very nature of the exodus from our admittedly small gang
Is there any way we can change the graphic set up here? I mean, the black isn't all that welcoming is it?
Re: the board
When we hijacked the board after nous' disappearance, we said we'd leave everything the same...
But it's been over a year since we hijacked it. Tell you what. When they get done moving it to Yuku or whatever I'll start playing around and learn the CSS to ezboard. I do forum design on several of the systems now - how hard can this one be?
/me blinks.
But I'd really love some ideas and graphics. So be thinking about what you'd like and get me ideas or I will code black on black with really tiny letters.
Re: the board
Someone cared enough to get rid of the ads. I'd like to thank our anonymous donor, whoever it is. Now I feel like I'm going to have to write something.
I do have a project I'm working on but it's kind of dumb.
Re: the board
The sound of his foot steps resonated through the dark gymnasium as walked to where the stage might be located during a large concert. But it was empty now. The distant dim glow of emergency exit signs provided the only illumination, but he knew the way so he closed his eyes and walked, listening to the echoes of his shoes against the concrete.
He eventually felt that he had reached the center of the empty massive structure and stopped. Eyes still closed he raised his arms and spun slowly, as if trying to pickup some of the remaining energy which once flowed from the distance corners. He thought back and smiled. He was glad that there was never a capacity crowd. Smaller groups make better music he thought. He remembered some of the songs and laughed.
Then he stopped. And lowered his arms. Why does everything have to change, he wondered. Life was so good as a child. Everything wonderous. No danger. And I had to grow up. He thought of many times when things were good and for some reason it changed.
And he thought of when voices came from different corners of where he was now standing. How those voices taught him, how they laughed at his class clown antics. How they listened when he needed help, how he tried to help them. He smiled one of those smiles...you know, the kind that is half a smile and half a knowing frown.
I'll never really leave this place he thought. Though lately I sneak in when it is empty, someday I'll go up to my reserved seat, dust it off, but batteries in my bull horn and start singing whatever damn song pops up in my hat holder.
He shoved his hands in his pockets and walked out the way he came.
