The Old Batman
Not, the comics (I wish I had the money, time, and other resources available to have comics), but the cartoon. And not the new one that is on the WB or Batman Beyond, but the old cartoons that first appeared on Fox and can now be found on Cartoon Network after Ronin Warriors.

That is truly one of my favorite cartoons ever. For an American cartoon (or cartoon period), it had very adult themes, and used those nicely while still being forced to abide by FCC Regulations. The animation was superb, well drawn and downright spooky. Frankly I don't think that the newer Batman or Batman Beyond animation is nearly as good (though both are not that bad). I loved the shadow of batman that was constantly everywhere and the ironic humor that could be found in the show.

The music itself, most of it a variation on the single Batman theme, is fantastic in my opinion. I love how the music was changed to fit a scene, but still retains that Batman feeling (I nearly shat myself on the episode of Batman Beyond where Wayne comes out in the Bat-Mech and the old music with an operatic theme starts playing).

And the episodes themselves are clever. There is not just one type of episode, where enemy comes, causes trouble and is whupped by Batman. There are mysteries, such as "The Man Who Killed Batman," there are cases where Batman is trying to help the enemy, and the are times when he stops the enemy without violence (think "Clayface" in one of my favorite episodes). The cartoon also added new enemies (Temple Fugate, the Clock King) and really in my opinion gave new depth to Batman.

Other than some of the new enemies, did the cartoon follow any comic storylines? Do you think it was an accurate recreation of Batman from the comics? Did you like the cartoon in comparison with the others or period?

Re: The Old Batman
Hi X-Himy. Thanks for stopping by my humble board. Interesting topic you've started here. I must agree that the old Fox episodes of the Batman animated series were superb. I hate the new ones on WB (the art is horrible now). I can honestly say that Batman was the best animated show based on a comic book that I've ever seen. I always loved the episode where that poor schmoe was screaming at the Joker before he knew who the Joker was, and the Joker kept tabs on the guy for years until he needed him to help with a crime. The guy acted like he was gonna blow up the Joker, but he had a fake bomb. That one was excellent. Not only was the art superb in the gold old days of Fox, but like you said, the music was awesome too.
As for your questions, a lot of the episodes were at least loosely based on actual comic storylines. For example, the ones with Ras Al Ghul that were on Cartoon Network last week were heavily based on a comic storyline. There were a lot of "original" storylines just for the show too though. The interesting thing though is the trend right now of the comics mimicing the animated show. The Harley Quinn and LockUp characters created for the show were added to the comics continuity. Also, They are designing Batman's costume and the Gotham City of the comics to look more like those of the newer episodes (unfortunately the WB ones). As for accurate interpretation of the character, I can't say. There have been too many different portrayals of Batman in the comics too judge that. However, I must say that as a comics fan, I felt it was about as fitting and well-done of a portrayal they could have done for the mass market. I loved the episodes on Fox, but I'm not too fond of ther new WB ones. I haven't really watched a whole lot of the Batman Beyond ones or the Superman shows, but I'm not overly fond of them (there were one or two excellently done Superman ones, including the big crossover with Batman one). The Fox ones were about the best animated comics shows I've ever seen.

Re: The Old Batman
I love the one that you are reffering to (where the Joker keeps tabs on the guy). I love the episode, "The Man who killed Batman." I disliked most of the newer WB cartoons, except for a few. The one where Batgirl has the dream where her father finds out about Batman, the one where Scarface's ventriloquist is rehabilitated, but then harassed by his own personal demons, and the one where Mr. Freeze tries to destroy that which people love and hope for.

Anyway, thank you for the info on Ras Al Ghoul, I love his episodes (especially the flashback episode to the old West). I would have thought he was created for the show. How about the Mad Hatter, Temple Fugate (Clock King), and Scarface, were they created too?

Re: The Old Batman
Mad hatter was definately a comics mainstay before the show. I'm not sure if Scarface was introduced in the comics or the show first, but he's been in both for years. Clock King sounds like a familiar name from the comics, but I don't remeber him being in any, so I think he was created for the show. If he was in the comics first, he was a very minor villian. I know for a fact that Harley Quinn was created for the show and just recently was introduced into the comics too. Lockup was the same way. A lot of the villians were in the villians were orignally in the comics, such as: Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Mad Hatter, Catwoman, Clayface, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc Count Vertigo (or whatever his name is), Ras Al Ghoul, Bane, the Scarecrow (one of my favorites), and a few others.

Another episode I love is the one where Batman teams up with his childhood hero, the Grey Ghost. Excellent episode written just for the show.

Yes! Great show, and also where at least part of the opening comes from. I liked in the Batman Beyond episode Inque, Inque finds the Batcave and starts trashing it. In order to hide his identity, Wayne puts on the Grey Ghost mask.

Re: The Old Batman
I would have to agree that the old Fox show was better than the new WB one, although I really enjoyed the new one with NightWing, and when the new Robin, Tim Drake, came. A couple of the old Batman episodes were also based on Frank Miller's Batman: Year One, which is currently being considered for the Fifth Batman movie.

Re: The Old Batman
Surely. I am not saying the new Batman is that bad, but I think the older ones are much better. I love the episodes of Batman Beyond where you get a look at the Batcave. In the show it is full of memorabilia from the old shows, especially the enemies costumes (and certain things like the Freeze Gun and a bullet ridden Scarface).
