The Sorting Hat Belonged to Gryffindor!
I can't believe I never noticed this! It has WILD ramifications if we over-analyze it.

You know how each year the Sorting Hat sings a different song before the sorting begins? Well...in GoF, the song contains this verse:

While still alive, they did divide
Their favorites from the throng,
Yet how to pick the worthy ones
When they were dead and gone?

'Twas Gryffindor who found the way,
He whipped me off his head

The founders put some brains in me
So I could choose, instead!

The Sorting Hat belonged, originally, to Godric Gryffindor!

So...that means that in CoS, it may have simply been the fact that the hat was Godric's that allowed Harry to remove Godric's sword...and not that he is a "true Gryffindor" at all!

What do you think?

The hat indeed belonged to GG, but THEY (all the founders, including SS) put the brains in the hat so it could sort a student properly.

If a "true Ravenclaw" had been in Harry's situation, no doubt the hat would have supplied a solution befitting RR, a witty, thinking solution.

The sword kind of makes me think GG favored the physical tactic of killing the monster rather than out-thinking it.

Very effective against a Basilisk, don't you think?

Harry may be a "true Gryffindor", but he represents the best of the other houses too: out-thinking the dragon, etc.
