The Ultimate Final Fantasy Party
I had a game going of FF with 4 white mages - probably the hardest party to beat the game with, unless 4 black mages is even harder. After finishing it that way, though, I'd like to try with the ultimate FF party. But what is it? I've beaten the game several times, but usually with fairly normal parties - two warriors of some persuation (usually one of them a fighter), then two mages. I did it with the "default" party once (which I think is Fighter, Black Belt, Theif, Red Mage).

I had a friend who touted the benefits of 4 knights. He liked it enough to level everyone up to level 50. I'm sure that's a powerful party, but there's no way to heal, and equiping knights is expensive. More importantly, I'm not even sure knights are more powerful than Black Belts. But 4 Black Belts would still have the same problem that Knights have - namely, no healing. (actually, I think after class change, Knights do have SOME healing, but very little). I'm thinking that white and black mages probably aren't worth having - as has been said, black mages have to save their powerful magic for boss fights, making them worthless most of the rest of the time.

I think a party of 2 Black Belts and 2 Red Mages might be worthwhile. It seems to have every advantage you could want and little disadvantage.

I gave this party (that is, 2 Black Belts and 2 Red Mages) a try tonight, but I had a couple of setbacks. I played with Nester DC because I didn't want to have to delete my save file with the 4 white mages I had already started. After playing to some time past getting the pirate ship, I exited the game... and noticed it did not save to my memory card. I tried several different things, but apparently what happened was, if you change VMUs after booting up, you won't be able to use them at all. (I used a 4x memory card, and switched it to the 3rd page after boot up). I didn't want to be detered, so I tried again... this time making sure I switched to the 3rd page before NEster finished booting. I think verified that the save worked.

I played a little bit longer, saved, and then simply turned the dreamcast off... forgetting that you have to actually exit the game to nester to get it to save to your memory card. Opps. So I once again lost some game time (I lost some Mars Matrix high scores over a similar issue) This will take some getting used to (I'll have to mentally translate "Hold reset as you turn the power off!" to "Exit the game, don't just turn it off!")

Anyway, I don't know if this party would be the optimal party, but I think it would be a good one.

FF Party
I tried with 4 white mages once. I named them the same as you did :) I got bored after beating Garland. WHile I don't mind leveling up, that got to be a bit insane.

The first time I played I used a fighter and one of each mage. The second time, I used a fighter, black belt, black mage, white mage. The third time, I used a fighter, black and white mage, and a thief.

2 black belts and 2 red mages seem like a good party; early on, the red mages should be useful for fighting, and by the time the black belts are killer fighters, the mages should have some hefty spells. The good thing about 2 red mages is that you can have a healer and a attack magic user.

"The second time, I used a fighter, black belt, black mage, white mage. The third time, I used a fighter, black and white mage, and a thief. "

Your third party was the first one i ever used to beat the game. I also used your second party once.

I'm not sure how useful the Red Mage's attack magic will be (I don't really remember from previous games). But I think his basic attack power should be decent enough, even if not quite as powerful as a high level black belt or knight. I will buy LIT for both of them, though. On my previous failed try last night, I noticed every character in my party had trouble simply hitting water enemies. I guess I'll also at least try Fire 3 on the Vampire and Lich.

The main reason I choose 2 Red Mages instead of all black belts or knights, though, is for contingency purposes. I know some NES gamers complain about how some areas at the end of the game have enemies that can kill you with one hit. Well, I think Red Wizards can learn life 1, so even if one wizard is killed, the other could revive. And if things ever get really bad in a fight, I could have two healers.

Usually, when I play FF1, I know when I'm ready for the earth cave for the first time because it's when I can afford the best available armor for the knight. This time, things'll obviously be different.
