Theme for Week of 9/8/03 ~~ LEARNING FROM SETBACKS
This week's VIRTUAL MEETING theme is: Learning from Setbacks
Think about a time in your life when you had to keep trying in order to reach a goal. I think about my Masters program and how stressful it was for me at times. What characteristics do I need to succeed:
~ Perseverence
~ Determined
~ Committed
~ Stubborn
~ Have the desire to succeed
Think way back to childhood, what are some things you ahd to learn how to do, but often had setbacks when trying:
~ Bike riding
~ Swimming
~ Driving a car
Naturally, for most of us.... when we tried some of those things for the first time - we were NOT professionals - right? We had setbacks.... but we learned from our mistakes and kept trying. What made you keep trying?? If you can learn from those things - you can certainly learn on your weight-loss journey and use all that LEARNING to keep moving forward and SUCCEED!!!
You can have the same success with weight-loss. We just have to remember to LEARN from our mistakes. Getting out of control doesn't mean we've blown it... we just need to LEARN from it!
Setbacks are NOT failures!!! Never let a setback become an excuse!!!
What are some of the things others have learned along their WW journey:
~ Make the right choices and you will lose weight
~ Keep focused
~ Stay in control
~ You CAN be successful
~ The right mix / balance really makes a difference
~ Faster is not better
~ Realize mindless eating
~ Plan ahead
~ Set small goals (the big picture can be too overwhelming)
~ There's a "right" way and a "wrong" way to lose weight
~ Always learning
We must all realize we're learning and absorb that! Think how smart you'll be when you reach your goal!!!
Final thought as you begin your week....
Success is getting up just one more time than you fall down!

This young lady signed my guestbook a while back and I was inspired by how she was able to admit she had gained back the majority of her weight, but made the commitment to start WW again. Check it out:

Persistence
One of the keys to being successful in anything you do is persistence. Once you have determined exactly what it is you want to accomplish, you must take massive action on a consistent, persistent basis in order to succeed. Think of it like building a muscle. If you have never weight trained before, the first time you walk into a gym, chances are you will not be able to bench press 250 lbs. However, if you are persistent, and you consistently go back to the gym, you will find yourself getting stronger and closer to your goal with each and every visit.
One of the things you’ll notice on your journey towards your goal, are roadblocks. That is, you will encounter obstacles that seem to jump out of nowhere in an attempt to halt your progress. Count on these obstacles. They are a part of life. Everyone would have every success they ever wanted if there were no obstacles. Your job is to be persistent and work through those obstacles. If you find little or no obstacles along the way, chances are you are not really challenging yourself. And when you do reach your goal, you won’t experience the feeling of ‘sweet success’. Make your goal a challenging one!
If you take the time to study any successful person, you will learn that the vast majority of them have had more ‘failures’ than they have had ‘successes’. This is because successful people are persistent; the more they stumble and fall, the more they get right back up and get going again. On the other hand, people that don’t get back up and try again, never reach success. For example, Walt Disney was turned down 302 times before he got financing for his dream of creating the “Happiest Place on Earth”. Today, due to his persistence, millions of people have shared ‘the joy of Disney’. Colonel Sanders spent two years driving across the United States looking for restaurants to buy his chicken recipe. He was turned down 1,009 times! How successful is Kentucky Fried Chicken today? Having said this, keep in mind that you must constantly reevaluate your circumstances and the approach you are using to reach your goal. There is no sense in being persistent at something that you are doing incorrectly! Sometimes you have to modify your approach along the way. Every time you do something you learn from it, and therefore find a better way to do it the next time.
Today is the day to begin your journey, using consistency and persistency, towards tomorrow’s successes!

Re: Theme for Week of 9/8/03 ~~ LEARNING FROM SETBACKS
Tonia, girl this is really motivating me more and more. I had a major setback yesterday just sat in the house eating every low point thing I had in sight and drinking diet cherry coke like it was beer. I thought about even throwing up the mess I eat. But then I realized it was one day and with the exercising that I have been doing and knowing that I am able to get back OP. I am able to start over again and make sure that setback will not happen again as God is my witness.

Excellent Topic Tonia. I did read that page of the young lady that you mentioned. It's good to know and that you made mention that set backs are NOT failures. If one keeps trying to achieve their goal they are NOT failures.
Great Concept Here.

Re: Theme for Week of 9/8/03 ~~ LEARNING FROM SETBACKS
I got this from a new WW based site and I absolutely love it.
Seventeen Words That Will Never Fail You
Weight-loss success will be yours when you prepare yourself
to be thinner, listen to positive messages, smile through challenges,
care enough about yourself and success to do whatever it takes to
make it happen, choose to embrace the changes that are occurring,
keep your focus on your Winning Outcomes, believe in yourself,
relax and not expect yourself to be perfect, act on changes that
will further your progress, forgive yourself if necessary, pray for
strength to follow through with your goals, trust the Program, realize
that change is exciting, persist in the face of obstacles, accept that
success doesn’t happen overnight, risk becoming thinner, and wait,
even when that is the hardest thing to do.
