Tony Hawk games I think of all the massively popular Playstation games (Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9, etc), the only ones I've played so far that seem like they may not be overrated are the Tony Hawk games. I have the first two (I picked PSX versions over DC because i wanted the original versions. I decided to pass on #3 for now, because I hear TH3 for PSX has been scaled down from the PS2 version. I also don't really care that the DC versions would have had less pixellation than the PSX games) I'm mostly working on #1 now, though I played a little of 2. The way the first game works is, you have 2 minutes to play a level (in career mode, anyway, the mode that really matters) and you have 5 goals - to get some score, then a higher score, find a hidden tape, find the 5 letters to spell "SKATE", and find 5 other goals (eg., break 5 boxes, grind 5 tables, etc) The latter 3 goals are pretty good and making you explore a level and really get to know it. The first stage is pretty straightforward as far as being able to see this stuff. Later stages sometimes have this goals in plain sight, but you have to figure out how to reach them, or somettimes you'll have to put some effort into simply finding them, since there are some hidden areas. Once you have so many goals, you can go to another level. This is nice because you don't get frustrated or bored having to get every single goal in one stage, but can alternate between a few stages. I think I only opened 5 areas in #1, but I think every 3rd area is a competition, where you just try to get a high score. Well, going back to my original sentence, the reason this game doesn't seem to be overrated is that it does seem to be a real game, and involve skill. Last night, I found where the secret tape was in the mall level, but then spent maybe two hours trying to get it (and I still haven't found it). The game's score system seems pretty deep, but I'm still learning it. The game seems to coach you through it with ever increasing point goals as the game goes on - you don't need to know much about it to get the first few, but will need to learn more as the game goes on. Re: Tony Hawk games
I've only experienced a Tony Hawk game on a DC demo disc, and I wan't impressed much. On the other hand, I only saw MDK 2's beauty the second time I played through the demo.
The Tony Hawk games never appealed to me, but since I trust your opinions, and you and I have similar taste in games, maybe I ought to give one a serious try. I have about 18 games to beat first, though :) |

I LOVE FO! Hmm, I don't know if I would recommend them quite yet, anyway. I guess I'll wait until I finish them. I was planning on rambling on them a bit more, but I was interupted, so I had to send that through. Maybe I'll talk more about them later. |

THPS I've been playing this for awhile now. I've got about 20 tapes and 2 comp medals so far. It's starting to get tough. I've cleared out the warehouse, school, and mall tapes, but some tapes on the downhill jam, San Francisco, and the other city level are pretty tough. I've started getting tapes for the other characters, too (I use Tony the most). I, too, like how you must explore levels to accomplish goals. I have yet to learn how to rack up massive scores, though. It's rare that I can pull off a 10,000 point combo. I need to learn the moves a little better. I can perfom grabs, flips, and grinds on demand, but I still pretty much mash the D-Pad, so which trick I do is random. I haven't tried using the specials, and those can rack you up big points. Anyway, I think it's a good game. I'm not planning on buying any more Tony Hawk games, though. One can last me awhile. |

I LOVE FO! Glad you sound like you're enjoying it. I haven't been playing it lately. It's a game I've been playing in spurts. What I had been playing was Demon's Crest. I'm missing just one item, but you need every item in the game to fight the true boss. I'm halfway tempted to cheat and look up where that item is so I just fight the real boss (which I expect to be more fun than the needle-in-the-haystack task of looking through every stage for that one missing item) but I'll continue to try to look for it on my own at least for a little while.
