Vlachs=Romanians
The name Vlach came from Romanian Province Wallachia which means The Country of Romanians.Vlachs are called Romanians who live in south of Danube. For example people who live in Timok Valley are called Vlachs but they are Romanians.I saw about them on tv and they speak very well Romanian.

Re: Vlachs is not Romanians
Every Romanian is a Vlach, but not every Vlach is a Romanian. Vlach is a broader term for latinate pre-slav Balkan people. :)

Re: Vlachs is not Romanians
Vlahii sunt populațiile romanizate din Europa Centrală și Răsăriteană: românii, aromânii, istro-românii și megleno-romanii, dar de la crearea statului modern român, acest termen este folosit numai pentru a-i desemna pe vlahii care locuiesc la sud de râul Dunărea.

Ei sunt descendenții coloniștilor romani sau a populației locale romanizate dacice, tracice si ilire.
Termenul de Valah este din germana si a fost preluat de slavi sub forma de Vlah.

Re: Vlachs is not Romanians
In tarile balcanice din afara Romaniei termenul vlah nu se mai foloseste pentru romani. Numai cei interesati de istorie mai stiu ca odata acest nume (Valahia) era al Tarii Romanesti.

Majoritatea lumii acuma intelege populatia aromana din Albania, Grecia, Macedonia si Bulgaria sub termenul vlah. In Bosnia si Croatia vlah inseamna sarb (!!) in mod batjocoritor.

Re: Vlachs is not Romanians
First of all i must say that there are more than enough greeks who have learned the meaning of the word respect.

The word romanian mean simple something that is from Rome. Romanian language is the language of the romans, latin. So vlachs of greece speak a romanian language like all vlachs.:

Now if a country has decided to be named romania that doesn't mean that we vlachs must become subjects to this country.

P.S. EnotitaSloga this friend of you is a vlach-speaking serb?:)

Re: Vlachs is not Romanians
Well...a little confusion

The language of the Romans was Latin, not Romanian.
Proto-Romanian is the name of the neo-latin language spoken in Eastern Roman Empire. This langage has 4 dialects: daco-romanian (or shortly Romanian), aromanian, megleno-romanian and istro-romanian. This means we all speak dialects of the same language. Vlachs were considered all citizens of Eastern Europe speaking a neo-latin language; most of them are today Romanians (one of their regions was called for centuries Wallachia). From 1918 till 1940 many Vlachs from Greece, Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria moved to Romania - around 40.000 families; they are called today in Romania machedoni (macedonians=they come from Macedonia), they still speak Aromanian, but most of them only use it inside the family. Now, the other Vlachs remaining in Balkans have 2 different ideas about themselves: a part fo them consider to be brothers with Romanians, and another part think they are Romanized Greeks. However, these 2 dialects - aromanian, megleno-romanian are gradually disappearing both in Greece and in Romania. The other dialect, istro-romanian is almost gone, only 1500 speakers left in Croatia.

Re: Vlachs is not Romanians
The term Wallach is from German Language and means Roman or Latin.

The term Valachus(Valah)is also from German Language but means Român (Romanian).

Also South Slavic People(like Bulgarians) took the term Valah but they used it as Vlah.During the time the word Vlah gained other meanings.

Dankat Motanule,you are right!
