ackkkkkkkkkkk! our birds r mating
hey guys
guess what we saw a couple days ago?
l looked over at the cage while we were talking, and saw my guy (that's his name) and zechs (the femaile) mating..
only thing is, l'm not sure what to do about it.
l mean, we could probably split em up, but A) l dont want to, and B) l'm not entirely sure how long it's been going on for - which means they could already be close to laying eggs, which means splitting them up may be harmful... so yeah. l'm kinda confused, lol. anyway we're thinkin of making our own nesting boxand hoping for the best.. so yeah. wish me luck? and maybe... l dunno. that we dont get in too much trouble fo rthis? lol

Re: ackkkkkkkkkkk! our birds r mating
What kind of birds are they? Many will mate easily, and some don't even require a nesting box.We used to see canaries regularly lay eggs in thier food dishes,on the floor, anywhere they could possibly lay.And parakeets(budgies) will sometimes lay on the floor of the cage, if it's kept warm enough, although they prefer a nest box.Cockatiels prefer having a box, but make sure that if you make one, you put a hinged lid on it, so you can check on the eggs, and babies. Many times, birds will lay,and brood for a while, then start ignoring the eggs,or abandon the hatchlings, so you need to be able to look in on them, to make sure they're doing ok.
And sometimes, some birds will go through mating behaviour, but not produce a thing. If you want them to mate, though, I would recommend giving the female extra vitamins, and an extra source of calcium, so she doesn't lay weak eggs.
If you have any problems,or questions, just let me know, if I don't have an answer, I'll find one for you, but I do have a bit of experience in the field.
Good luck.

Re: ackkkkkkkkkkk! our birds r mating
hey...
they're bugdies, but l'm having a pretty bad problem with them.
we have 5 budgies up here (nothing else), named (oldest to youngest)
darlin - oldest female...you might say mother earth, lol. very curious.
my guy -oldest male, and the one who's been mating
zechs - female, adn the one laying eggs we think
lily - um she's confused? she has both colors on her cere
angel - male
anyway, in the last week, sam and l have had to stop angel from attack my guy several times, adn today it got pretty bad. l hit the cage (to startle them) and it didn't work, so l stuck my hand in, and when l went to pick up my guy, angel came with him..he was clinging on to him, pretty tight. my guys not injured, l dont think, but... *sighs* l've put angel in another cage in the same room, but l feel bad cause l refuse to let him out... l'm afraid if l do he'll just go after my guy again...he's getting more agressive.
fuck...
my guys not the youngest bird in the world (about 6 l think... zechs is 2 or 3, the people who had her before didn't know how old she was l think.) and he's had a broken wing, so... l'm worried about him.
oi. l know this sounds a lil disjointed, but dyou have any advice, shadeaux? right now we have them in a fairly decent sized cage, and the doors open whenever we're home (which is almost all the time) so l d0ont think space is going to help... not that kind, anyawy. thing is l dont wanna lock angel in the cage alone, either, because it's not exactly fair to him, even if he is causing the problem. the cage he's in now is so small, and there aren't any toys.... should l make that his permanent cage for a while? l hate to think of him being alone like that (usually he's a very sociable bird), but l dont wanna hear my guy screaming again, either... l almost lost him once, l'm not going to risk losing him again.
anyway, any advice really would be appreciated. we've got a nesting box (home made, and kinda crappy, but it should work) attached to the cage, and there're plenty of distractions in the cage and around the room...the ceiling, for instance. they like eating the ceiling, lol.
anyway, yeah. thanx...

Yep, thats it in a nutshell.Your males are getting territorial. And 6 really isn't that old, budgies actually have a fairly long life span(some have made it past 15).
It's very natural for two male birds, even if they've always gotten along before, to begin fighting like this.I think Gaias idea of seperating each male bird, with a female or two,is a great idea.

Re: ackkkkkkkkkkk! our birds r mating
huh... might work. we have five birds, 3 females, 2 males...the only reason l'm surprised about my guy, really, was that he was hit by a rotating fan 3 years ago and broke his wing, and l didn't think he'd be strong enough to mate... l mean up until recently he didn't fly except for short distances, ya know? but l think l'll give it a try. always wanted darlin to mate, lol. she's my queen baby, so maybe if l set darlin with angel lily, and leave zechs and my guy as is.... thanx for the advice, it actually sounds like it could work. l felt bad enough leaving him (angel) in the cage all alone like htat anyway. thanx, guys, lol.
@ shadeaux
yeah l'm hoping my guy n darlin 'll make it that far. but he's had some pretty rough times, like when his feet went blue and l found out he has poor circulation. that fan really did a number on him, poor birdy. he's so much stronger now than he was 3 months ago though, so l think maybe l'll hold out hope.
laurie.
you guys too!! *hugs*

Re: ackkkkkkkkkkk! our birds r mating
Mating instinct is very strong in some birds, and I guess he's just determined he's gonna.Definitely put the pair you want to mate in a cage by themselves, though.Budgies stick together when they mate, and care for the hatchlings as a couple.
One of my former landladies bred budgies as a hobby. She would keep them all in an aviary cage, until they began to show signs of pairing off. Then she would seperate the pair into a seperate cage,so they could mate in peace, since other males could be a threat to the babies,if they also wanted to mate with that particular female.
You will want to look up some information about breeding them,as well. Some first time moms need help with the young,so you'll want to know what to have on hand to help out.I'll try to find you some good sites with information on it,if you like.

www.budgie-parakeets.com/
This is one of the sites I've found that has somewhat accurate information on it.They really should stress the importance of feeding fresh foods(greens, fruit,sprouts,etc...)more than they do,though.
