book one wonderings
the other thread made me think of this "what if" question.
What if Harry hadn't told the sorting hat he wanted to be in Gryffindor, and had ended up in Slytherin and one of Malfoy's cronies? Do you think Malfoy Sr. would have been pleased or displeased that Harry was a friend of Draco's? like welcome him to the dark side with open arms? or maybe kill him in retribution for Voldemort?

I think he would welcome him. I really do.
I think Draco would want to be around the "big dog" on campus in the form of Harry. Malfoy Sr may be a little more of a problem cause his intrest would be more calculating. A way to get Volder's back maybe. Or a way of keeping your friends close, but ememies closer?
I would think the way Draco acted towards Harry before the sorting, the whole" some families are better than others" thing, I think he was acting on his fathers orders to befriend Harry. After all, if you beat Volders, even on a fluke, as a baby, I think the Malfoys would want him on their team.

Well, I think that both Lucius and Draco would have welcomed him for all the reasons put forth by rhbrand. However, I have a very hard time imagining our Harry actually becoming one of Draco's cronies. In my mind, if he had failed to choose to go to Gryffindor (which was, after all, what Dumbledore essentially told him he had done), he would have ended up a completely miserable Slytherin, a fish out of water with probably no friends in his own house.

I can possibly see where Lucious and Draco would befriend Harry for selfish reasons. Voldemort on the other hand. He tried to kill Harry and it backfired almost killing Voldemort the one thing he was trying to avoid; he loathes Harry. If Lucious and Draco did perchance liken to Harry what would happen if Voldemort came back into power. Lucious would probably in my opinion tried to give Harry up for a sacrifice if you will to Voldemort. So if Harry would have ended up in Slytherin and then pals with Draco I most certainly believe Lucious would have been scheming something about killing Harry or offering him to Voldemort or something.

I think if they really truely could turn Harry into a dark wizard, Volders would accept him, much like the Sith and apprentace in Star Wars.

Yeah that is a good way of putting it too. I like that connection with the "what if" story.

has anyone ever changed houses? I agree that if Harry was put in Slytherin, he'd end up miserable. I wonder if he'd just have to suck it up, or if Dumbledore would move him.
I'm not sure if I think Harry would be welcomed as a dark wizard with Voldemort, if that's what Harry wanted. On the one hand, I'm sure they take everyone they can get, and aside from his magical skill, Harry is very resourceful and brave, so I'm sure he'd be useful to them.
On the other hand, Voldemort is all about power, and it might be hard for him to not at least try to finish Harry off. His power might diminish in the eyes of his followers if everyone knew there was someone around whom Voldemort had not managed to beat. Also, evil people can't really trust anyone, so Voldemort would probably always be suspicious that Harry would try to overthrow him for the top job, which, if Harry were evil, he would probably try to do.
