computers
hey, i emailed my RA about a week ago, but she hasnt gotten back to me, so i'm just going to ask here.

i was wondering if it would be ok for me to bring my laptop, NOT to be on it for hours on end, but just because im afraid that if i run out of room on my digital camera's memory sticks, i wont be able to take any more pictures. if i had my laptop, i could transfer the pictures onto its hardrive and be ready to go. thats what i usually do.

however, i can understand if this couldnt be ok. i know that you guys dont want us to be distracted from interacting with each other, but i promise that my laptop wouldnt be a distraction like that. but if i cant bring it, i'm sure i can figure something else out. thanks!:grin

Computers are solidly part of the "What Not To Bring" list found in the Student Handbook. So, no, you can't bring one.

There's a few things you can do to work through potentially running out of space to take pictures.
  1. Don't take full-resolution photos - Most of the time your digital camera defaults to taking the biggest possible photo... one's that would still look great if you printed them at poster size. If you reduce your setting to a smaller resolution, then you can fit many more photos on the same size memory stick, and they'll still look great for basic prints, Flickr, WebShots, etc. When you are taking a picture of something you think might look good as an 8x10 or poster, then readjust to the higher setting for that one particular photo.
  2. Delete mistakes / bad photos along the way - All digital cameras allow you view and remove pictures directly from the card. Every once in a while, just go through and delete off your memory card those pictures that are too dark, too blurry, duplicates, etc.
  3. Get another memory stick - They're still relatively cheap these days, and having an extra on hand might help.
  4. Have your parents offload on Parent's Day - If your parents are coming for Parent's Day midway through the program, have them bring along a laptop that you can use to offload photos onto. Just remember that they can't leave the computer with you when they leave.
  5. Faculty & Staff are taking photos, too - We take tons of photos during the month, and you'll have access to them through the web site. So, if you miss something (or don't feel like hauling around your camera), chances are we've got the event covered. Plus, don't forget that there's lots of other students taking photos, too, and it's very common for people to share their photos through sites like Flickr after the month is over.
So, there's ways to work around not having a computer to offload photos. Hopefully these tips/ideas will help you out. :)
