Well, firstly, every person differs in what elements they feel most connected to. For example, I have a strong water/ earth tie...therefore i do water scrying and tarot. I also do this really werid thing with moonstone and adventurine that i cant explain, but works for me. However, for obvious reasons, you will NEVER see me fire scry. Your fears, your loves, your interest, all affect how we perceive the seen world, its not such a stretch to see how it can affect the unseen, is it?
To a point, its trial and error. I am a list maker, i will constantly encourage you to write things out in a list

be warned!!!!
Make a list of things that move you.... watching a flame dance on a candle, watching waves break on a shore, beuatifull visiual art, the written word. Now make a list of things you fear greatly, if your greatest fear drowning? Being burned alive? Flying? does the written word bore you to tears? or visual art, does you attention span lapse when forced to look at it??
In this vein, you can begin to break down which elements you patron. Once doing this, its time for homework. What kinds of divination involve fire? water? AAir? whichever elements you found yourself closley connected to ( There is always at least one or 2 that are more in tune to you then others so saying "im tuned to all/ none" is a cop out *tsk tsk* divination on a small level IS work if only to find your path)
now, comes the time when your view of right and wrong comes into play. Does the idea of scrying with ashes make you giggle? Do you force yourself not to roll your eyes as a dice thrower cast their dice? check off the ones you find ridiculous and unbeleivable. Obviously these will not work for you. (I have a friend who divines by soap bubbles which litterally cracks me up, but i have seen her right often enough not to question it)
NOW is the fun part.... trial and error!!! The remainder of your list is there for you to study. Begin with those that give a spiritual *thunk* but remeber to keep your list...you may find in a year your becoming a bit bored with one or two methods and wish to move on.
And dont forget the stars... the most basic and probably the oldest form of divination, more people choose it then even tarot.
