easy and inexpensive yule gift ideas
I think this topic would be nice to get going with out tradtions topic, heck they could turn out to be traditions at some point.
Here is one my kids like to do and people love them
chocolate coffee spoons
a bag of heavy duty plastic spoons
a bag of choc chips and a bag of white choco chips
food coloring red and green
melt your chips in separate bowls using a microwave is fine , add about a half tsp of shortening to your melted chocolate,
save a little of your white choco and mix in some red and then some green however you wish to color it, take your spoons dip the bowl of the spoon till covered, then put on wax paper to harden once on the wax paper you can drip some of hte colored choco on them for decorative appearance, once they have hardened you can wrap with a little piece of plastic wrap over the spoon bowl and tie some festive ribbon on it to keep it on, then you can put them in a coffee can decorated in the spirit of the holidays, you stir up your coffee with it or even hot cocoa, it adds that extra something , people love these.

Re: easy and inexpensive yule gift ideas
We like to make pomanders. Whole cloves are a bit pricey but can be purchased thru co-ops in bulk. Apples are traditional and nice; pears are exquisite. Oranges and tangerines and lemons are wonderful; limes are extraordinarily fragrant.
Kids who are old enough to handle fine motor skills do well with smooth-skinned fruit; older kids are better able to deal with citrus (which may require an ice pick to pierce the skin). You want firm, almost-ripe fruit.
Stud the fruit completely with the cloves. You can fasten a top ribbon, or bind with ribbon. If you wanna create something that will last for months, roll the thing in some type of fixative powder (I can go dig up some recipes if you can't find any, but ground orris root with some ground spice & a dash of essential oils, basically) and enclose the whole thing in a piece of open-weave fabric (cheesecloth, cotton) with a hanging cord or ribbon.
You can go simple or fancy. They're elegant, unusual, delightful.

Re: easy and inexpensive yule gift ideas
Isnt there some sort of story behind the cloves and an orange something to do with the sun I cant remember? That would be interesting to find out.
I bet they are wonderfully fragrant , sounds like a great thing to do gift wise and tradtion as well.
Here is another gift idea
little kids love this
snowman soup
depending on if you mix up your own hot cocoa out of say cocoa and powdered milk or if you just use packets, this is something little kids love
get some little zip lock baggies, you can holiday ones at the dollar store, put in enough hot choco mix for a cup then add some tiny marshmallows and some chocolate chips or a few hersheys kisses, label it snow man soup, then attach with apiece of tape a tiny candcane, I guess the idea of snow man soup just tickles the little ones. lol

another fun gift idea
Several baby food jars, well if you have access to them , if not you can use some decorative holiday baggies .
epsom salt
sea salt
baking soda
essential oils
food coloring
combine your salts and soda in a bowl add the scent of your choice and then a dab of the coloring of your choice , mix it with a spoon use the bowl of the spoon to mix in the coloring, you can put it in the jars and lable them and tie some festive pieces of clothe and ribbon on the lid or put smaller amounts in the baggies and lable this way you can put several scents in a basket for a sampler basket, when I do this I add a nice candle and maybe some tea, votives are very inexpensive at that dollar store as well as the epsom salts, kids like to mix and mash things so this is fun for them as well. keep a small scoop of coffee on hand and sniff it when the scents become over whelming this way it clears out your nose and you can once again tell what you are smelling lol.
