Tourism soars in the north

FALLING tourism has suffered a new blow with the revelation yesterday that arrivals in the north are up 30 per cent in the first four months of this year.
On top of that Turkish Cypriot press said yesterday that arrivals from Germany were up from 650 to 2,960.
Germany is the second biggest market for tourism to the government controlled areas but has been falling in recent years.
This week, it emerged that a German operator, Berge und Meer, which is affiliated with tour giant TUI, brought 15,000 German tourists to the north through Larnaca airport over the winter period.
At the same time, numbers to the south of the island have been falling every month since last August.
It is understood the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) made serious representations to the German company, which promised not to do the same again.
However, there is a concern that this could just be the beginning.
Industry sources said what made this case so serious was that even though in the past there was small numbers of tourists arriving through Larnaca airport in package deals that saw them transferred to the north, this company brought 15,000 people across.
The source said it was a very significant number of tourists for this time of the year.
“Germany is a very important market for Cyprus,” said the source, adding that the situation was made worse by the fact that while Greek Cypriot establishments were struggling through the winter period, tour operators were bringing people north.
Reports yesterday said that Greek Cypriot travel agents and hoteliers were also worried by the development.
Some said it began with the one-day excursions that began after the crossing points opened in 2003, which made many tourists curious about the north and has prompted them to return and holiday there.

I should hope so,, after all its in the EU and North Cyprus isnt, therefore nothing to worry about for now. Just some nice news thats all

Nice to hope. Italians were always fascists and always with the Germans and Turks. Their Government is not any better.

Desire, that is wonderful news.
I plan to visit north Cyprus next bayram. Any suggestions as to which towns, historical monuments and beaches I should visit?

The nice beaches are all over, you can visit Salamis bay hotel in magusa or go to Accupulco which is in Girne. Everywhere you look you shall see history and Natural Beauty. If you happen to wonder past a small town called Lefke head to CukurGalif to have some Fresh fish served from the ARMY restaurant, very nice.

In bulgaria you may kiss the ass of the turks and give them autonomy, but in cyprus things are different.

Then again what do you expect when it was drafted by the brits and americans
just look at iraq today or pakistan/india( kashmir ) or even israiel / palestine...all modern creations of the anglo - saxons.

I for one am having thoughts about trying to force a unification...i wouldnt mine splitting it PROPORTIONALTY to the population and have those parasites get in the EU themselves...

In Bulgaria we do not give autonomy to anybody - we live together! Don't come with excuses or explains like Pakistan or Israel, what US or UK do wish. If there is a wish, there is a way, right.

The tc's live off Greek land and in Greek homes...yes they are parasites and they multiply like cockroaches.
I stand by my statement....and yes, I am better than them. I actuallly work for a living and live in a house that I built in MY OWN PROPERTY !

Now I see, it's better to have the island separated in two..
You don't deserve to live together - since probably the most of Greeks there have that attitude.. it's kind of a wishful thinking I see too.
All started in the 70's when greek cypriots together with Greece wanted the island part of another country.. You even wanted England to help you in doing that. When turks got that clear, they reacted and kicked as$es.. Don't explain more - the facts are talking clear.
