JULY 20TH, 1974 CYPRUS PEACE OPERATION TO BE CELEBRATED IN MERSIN, ADANA AND SILIFKE
LEFKOSA (A.A) - 15.07.2007 - The July 20th, 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation will be celebrated in Mersin, Adana and Silifke as in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
The celebrations will be attended by a 16-member delegation of Cyprus veterans in uniforms.
The Cyprus veterans delegation will depart from the TRNC for Turkey on Monday afternoon.
Meanwhile, TRNC's Consul General in Mersin Oya Tuncali indicated that the TRNC is an important country in eastern Mediterranean which has taken big economic steps with the help of Turkey.
"Celebrating the July 20th in the TRNC and Mersin is very meaningful as this is the day when Turkish Cypriots entered an era of peace and freedom," stressed Tuncali.
As the 24th anniversary of the Greek Coup d'Etat of 15 July, 1974 and Turkey's legitimate intervention five days later on 20 July, 1974 approaches, it is important to recall several fundamental points which reflect the true nature of the Cyprus question.
The enmity and mistrust between the two peoples; Turkish and Greek Cypriots are rooted in history and are mainly the result of the ethnic cleansing which the Greek and Greek Cypriots staged against the Turkish Cypriots between 1963 and 1974 for achieving Enosis (the union of Cyprus with Greece). These attempts to bring Cyprus under Greek domination and particularly the coup staged by the Athens Junta on 15 July 1974 compelled Turkey as one of the Guarantor Powers of the Cyprus settlement under the Treaty of Guarantee to intervene on 20 July 1974 in order to stop the ethnic cleansing of our community.
The Turkish Cypriot people are grateful to Turkey for the effective security guarantees whiich are vital for the preservation of peace and stability on the island. The practical consequences of the events of 1963-1974 have been the emergence of parallel administrative, judicial and legislative organs for each of the two peoples. The institutional organisation of the Turkish Cypriot people developed through various stages and culminated in 1983 in the setting up of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The Turkish Cypriot people in the meantime, are leading their own life under their own flag, in peace and security within the territories of the TRNC. In spite of this, in the international field the Turkish Cypriots are denied the full exercise of their basic rights and freedoms.
The Greek Cypriot administration has embarked on a massive propaganda effort in misleading world public opinion on all aspects pertaining to the Cyprus issue. By perpetuating the fallacy of treating the illegal Greek Cypriot regime as the legitimate government under the false pretence of "Republic of Cyprus", the Greek Cypriot side reaps the benefits of satehood, engage in inhuman practices of embargoes against the Turkish Cypriots and benefit from practically all international aid originally given for both peoples of the island. Naturally they have shown no real interest in any kind of settlement which should be based on two sovereign states.
Most recently the efforts to deploy the S-300 missiles, putting into effect a joint military doctrine, the construction of air and naval bases for use by the Greek armed forces are the latest examples of their aggressive move. Despite the warnings of the Turkish Cypriot side and other countries and the UN, they went ahead and purchased the S-300 missile system from the Russian Federation. The S-300 missiles which would alter the military balance in the region dramatically, are a direct threat to the security of the Turkish Cypriot people and to that of Turkey. Naturally, Turkey as a Guarantor Power and the TRNC will take all the necessary measures to preserve the military balance.
Consequently, I can say that we as Turkish Cypriot people, are determined to defend our rights of equality, sovereignty, our independent state, the TRNC and Turkey's guarantorship no matter what trick the Greek Cypriots play.
Quote:Benny...how would you feel if the island was left to the TC's and GC's to figure out.
Without greece, turkey or the freakin brits.....
That has already been tried between 1960 and 1974. Hmm, let's see what happened in those fourteen years:
1-The Greek Cypriots expelled the Turkish Cypriots from the Cypriot government.
2-They tried to annihilate the Turkish Cypriots twice, in 1964 and 1967 only to be stopped by Turkish threats that it would intervene on the island.
3-They forced the Turkish Cypriots to run away to land-locked enclaves.
4-They blockaded all movements of goods and people into the enclaves.
5-If Turkey had not intervened in 1974, Turkish Cypriots'd have been massacred or expelled altogether from the island.
Now, tell me one good reason why the Turkish Cypriots should trust the Greek Cypriots; the Greek Cypriots who have recently voted into power an ex-EOKA killer.Edited by: benetton2 at: 7/20/07 1:00 pm

1-The Greek Cypriots expelled the Turkish Cypriots from the Cypriot government.
Wrong again...The TC's WITHDREW from the govt and took up arms. See TMT
2-They tried to annihilate the Turkish Cypriots twice, in 1964 and 1967 only to be stopped by Turkish threats that it would intervene on the island.
Again...see above. They did not want the brits to be kicked out and they sided with them. Its called divide and conquer and was orchestrated by england
3-They forced the Turkish Cypriots to run away to land-locked enclaves.
You guys withdrew...nobody forced you
4-They blockaded all movements of goods and people into the enclaves.
proof....
5-If Turkey had not intervened in 1974, Turkish Cypriots'd have been expelled or massacred altogether from the island.
I doubt it.....they were only 18% of the population
Re: Sick Turks
You are all sick in here.
Celebrate what @#%$ ?
The rape of old and young, the destruction of a beautiful country or the looting and destruction of all churches and Greek homes? You are sick ,go and see a f...shrink !
Re: Sick Turks
I love it when Greeks get angry. Look Cypriana, the peace operation brought peace to the island and freedom at last to the Turkish Cypriots. Before 1974, the Turks had been expelled from the Cypriot government; they had faced mass killing sprees by Greek Cypriots, first in 1964, then in 1967, who were only stopped by Turkish threats that it would intervene if the murders did not stop; they constantly faced the risk of annihilation by Greek Cypriots and Greek mainland soldiers that had illegally infiltrated into the island; they were forced to resort to land-locked enclaves, where all movements of goods and people were blockaded by the Greeks and last but not least, their homes had been destroyed and their properties had been confiscated. The operation put an end to the hostilities once and for all and averted the massacre and/or expulsion of Turkish Cypriots at the hands of EOKA fascists and their (implicit) supporters like you. Aren't these good enough reasons to celebrate, old lady?
Seeing the crippled mindsets of Greek Cypriots and how they tried to humiliate them between 1963-1974; how Greeks, be they from Cyprus or the mainland, fail to make any self-criticism, no wonder the Turkish Cypriots want to be the masters of their own fate. If you want to blame someone for 1974, then all you have to do is look in the mirror.
Eat your @#%$ heart out, old lady. Like I said, I can't find words to tell you how glad I am to see you mad. Edited by: benetton2 at: 8/3/07 8:27 pm
...
The Greek & Turkish Cypriots were victims of the British Imperialism. Their leaders played the game of the British, instead of conceiving a plan to get rid of the common enemy. Also the then America's NATO sluts (Greece and Turkey) played their own part in the whole story. Same old story like in the case of Pakistan and India.
The rest is history..as long as Akrotiri & Dhekelia are secured for the ''inspection'' of the middle east by the self-declared global police..
It's been a long, long time but I know a change is gonna come...
the Greeks rose against the english.. the Turks stood by the English.. the Turks were massacred.
my mums family ent thru hell because of the stupid enosis idea... Long live KKTC and Turkish Army.

EOKA, the group which freed your people from the Brits and gave you power in goivernment which you never deserved.
Re: ...
If Cyprus was 80% Turkish would it stayed independe4nt or the Turks would want Enosis with the mother land? Put your shoes on the foot Desire and look at the reality !
Your mother's family suffered because they betrayed their country. We suffered for defending our country.
Who is the traitor here? Not all Cypriots wanted Enosis. Read a little more and you will get enlightened !
Re: ...
