Australian Open Tennis - Official topic
Might aswell make one thread were everyone can input their thoughts and whatnot on the Aussie Open aswell as monitering the progress of Balkan players. We also have quite a few Melbournians who will be going to games and can give their 2 cents on how it was etc.
Open spans for two weeks and today is day one.
Already on the news its shown a mass of Croatian fans setting off flares and Ive just heard a slight report there are Serbs *rioting* at Melbourne Park.
Re: Australian Open Tennis - Official topic
Both camps are a pack of idiots. This is a tennis tournament, not a football match. Both camps should be expelled to leave the real lovers of tennis to be able to watch the game in peace.
Re: Australian Open Tennis - Official topic
The Serb group in attendance set up a forum and site where they discussed the event, repeatedly saying "we are going to support our players, were not there for the cros" etc. I guess the whole confrontation was unexpected so its a deadset shame. Dont know about the Croat group, but they seemed fairly organised aswell from what it showed on Channel 7 news.
Damn Sar, I keep thinking back to this sort of stuff happening in golf and sports like that...ahhh the Balkan sports etiquette

Up to 110 Serbian, Croatian and Greek fans were ejected from the Australia Open today after ethnic tensions boiled over into violence about 12.30pm.
A fight broke out between the Serbian and Croatian fans in the garden area of Melbourne Park.
Serbs and Croats threw bottles and tried to hit each other with their national flags.
Up to 20 police rushed in to stop the violence.
The Serbians were chanting "Die Croatians, die" in Serbian, and were joined by Greek fans shouting "Greece, Serbia, Greece, Serbia!"
Police calmed the situation by dividing the fans and escorting the groups out of different entrances.
The Greek contingent, who were standing near the Serbs but were not involved in the fighting, were angry that they had been ejected as well.
The Serbian and Croatian groups apparently had an understanding that today would be the Croatians' day to attend the tennis, and the Serbians would attend tomorrow.
A fight was apparently arranged for tonight.
"Monday is our day every year," said a Croatian fan, who identified himself as Cmladen Mrnuaus. "We have to fight back."
Tensions have died down at Melbourne Park since the ejections.
Those ejected were mostly of Serbian background, a Victorian police spokeswoman said.
"They were upsetting the Croatians; 150 people were ejected from the grounds shortly before 1pm. They are believed to be mostly Serbians.
"Earlier the Croatians had gathered in Federation Square, chanting their songs and lighting flares before they made their way to the arena."
No arrests have been made, and at this stage there are no reports of injuries.

We live in Australia where freedom of movement is guaranteed. Different ethnic groups cannot stop othrs from attending anything based on ethnicity. It would go against racial vilification laws.
Re: Australian Open Tennis - Official topic
In that case it is silly to expect Serbian fans to now show up today. Thing is, there haven't been any matches where a Serb has played a Croat, so ideally the fans shouldn't be present at the same matches anyway.
Anyway, this is silly... football hooliganism is being imported into tennis, and both Serbs and Croats are made to look like uncultured savages from this event. Even bringing national flags to a tennis match seems inappropriate. The tennis players are representing themselves individually more so than their countries.

No. 4 Ljubicic out of Australian Open
The Associated PressPublished: January 15, 2007
MELBOURNE, Australia: Fourth-seeded Ivan Ljubicic is out of the Australian Open, beaten in the first round Monday by Mardy Fish of the United States.
Fish beat Ljubicic 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-4, firing an ace to set up match point before Ljubicic, a quarterfinalist here last year, hit a backhand return of serve wide to give the American the win in 2 hours and 53 minutes.
The Croatian is the highest seeded player out of the tournament.
Our fellow Yugoslavians greatest hope of victory at this years open has sadly been kicked out of the competition in the first round
Im not happy about this, Because i actually respect Ivan Ljubicic as a person and as a Sportsman and support all represenatatives of ex-Yu nations. (Especially mixed ones like Ivan).
I think the Nazi Croats like Knin95 and his bitches like StreetMinded (Albanian-Montenegrin by ancestry) jynxed him, when they learned hes actually half Muslim. Damn you racist Fascist Croats......you ruined Slavic hopes of an enterataining Australian Open!!!!
