Chasing the darkness {{AW}}
((*innocently* Just doing my job. Actually, I'm bored out of my mind and feeling eerily creative! So I decided to make yet another thread [instead of a new layout, like I normally would do...] LMAO))

Great shadowed paws twitched as Jorn glared at yet another coyote. Even in his sleep, the damn things wouldn't leave him alone. Even in his dreams, the shadow of Deacon, the newest alpha of deadwood, hovered and glared at him through violent, vivid eyes. Over his shoulder loomed Pala, golden eyes laughing, mocking him. Mocking the once mighty Jorn. And no matter how the beta struggled, he couldn't get away from the duo's laughing eyes.

A fierce snarl as the black male awoke. Angry soul seething, he stood and shook off the last dregs of sleep. In the distance, a coyote's yip. Golden orbs narrowed, and he took off at a flat out charge, not giving the distant kindred of wolves a chance to run. Growling hatefully, he slammed into the smaller canine, ripping it's jugular in one easy move, reveling in the blood and it's greasy slide down his throat. With a flick of his head, he tossed the lifeless, still spasming body to the side, and charged another, who'd head the sounds and come to investigate. This time he toyed with the foul canine, letting it get ahead, and then with a swift burst of speed, catching and killing it as well.

He slowed to a stop, panting just slightly from his exertions. Impotent fury still seethed in his black soul, but he loped to a spring and drank deeply, then splashed about a few, rinsing the blood off. This was the third or fourth time he'd had to do this already. Not that he had a problem with the killing, but that it was at Deacon's orders. Jorn's lip curled slightly at the thought of the golden brute and his seemingly effortless victory over him. Yeah, well, he'd just keep on going, and someday the golden b*stard would slip up. And when he did, Jorn would be waiting in the wings to reclaim what was his.

Re: Chasing the darkness {{AW}}
He trotted along, nose to the ground, taking in all of the scents of his new home. Finally, here was a place to rest-and be of use to someone.

The ash of dead fire remained, if only in scent alone. There was a lot to take in, and he decided it would be meet to familiarize himself with the land, and the pack.

It was at that moment, when he stopped to sniff the trunk of a dead pine, that the pungent stench of blood and coyote reached his nose. His black tipped ears perked, and the saddlebacked male leaped the fallen log and trotted to the scene, curious.

He came onto the end of the fight, his tail waving slowly, level with his back. This one had a strong scent...and a temper-to which the dead coyotes attested.

He waited there, watching.

((Sorry it took me so long to respond, and doubly sorry I didn't switch accounts.))

Jorn exited the stream, shaking his magnificent mindnight hued pelt. Suddenly, he caught a whiff of another male. Golden eyes narrowing, his head jerked to the direction the scent had come from. With a soft growl, he realized this male still faintly smelt of the golden brute,Deacon. Must mean the poser of an alpha was pretending to do his 'job'. F*ck.

A chance to strenghten the number of his folowers, lost forever. This mutt would be as loyal as the others. If there were others. But the insane beta would play nice. He let the irritation flow from his expression, to be replaced by a look of welcome. The tension drained form his body, and the male seemed to uncoil, like a spring. The tip of his til wagged briefly. 'Cautiously', the male spoke. "Greetings."

Idrian was suspicious of his demeanor. He held his tail level, waving it slowly.

"Hello..." he replied. He watched the big male with a careful eye. "I am new to these lands...I take it you are a member of the Deadwood pack?"

He spoke the name of the pack...not the pack of the alpha. He didn't believe in that practice...this pack would forever be of Deadwood...Deacon's pack, were it so called, would fail at his overthrow or death...a pack had to have a sense of unity...of home...

"My name is Idrian."

((Sorry for the crapness. I'm sooooooooooo tired...LOL))

"Idrian, huh? My name's Jorn. And yeah, I'm the Beta of deadwood." he smiled offhandedly. "Been in these here lands three alphas, now. Almost was alpha myself." He shrugged, seemingly not caring.

"But que sera, sera, right?" His tail wagged slightly. "you like coyotes? Our alpha doesn't." He shrugged again. "hey, whatever. he's boss, right? right." Almost rambling, the male studied the other.

He canted his head. The conversation felt stilted...like something more was wrong here than met the eye.

"A pleasure to meet you, Jorn..." he said flatly, still unsure of what to make of him.

"And no, I'm none too fond of coyotes myself."

He listened carefully to the tone behind the words...this wolf...Jorn...he craved leadership...he was certainly strong enough to pass for a decent alpha...certainly. But he had lost the place.

"Better to be a beta sometimes, friend. Sometimes, it is even best to be omega. Alpha isn't all it's said to be." The old warrior turned nonchalantly and sniffed the ragged corpse of a coyote. His nose wrinkled in distaste. "Filthy...can't stand the little beasts..."

"Seems he was unfortunate to be on your bad side..."

"alpha isn't all it's cracked up to be..." Yeah. Maybe the old mutt was senile. So their darling golden alpha was slipping already. Excellent...

The dark male allowed a hint of a gloat to cross his face, then he smiled darkly. "D@mn filthy things always get on the wrong side of me. Though it's rare for anyone to be on the right side of me." The brute added with a rare burst of honesty and lucidity. Seeing a shadow move above, he galnced up and saw pala's familiar form. D@mn.

Pala slowly circled, then landed between the two males, preening her blue-black plumage. After her feathers were in place again, she allowed herself a galnce at the newest packmate. "Greetings. I am Pala, of deadwood." Her golden eyes danced impishly as she eyed the wolf as an equal, one equally ranked wolf to another. "I am a scout. I trust you are a newcomer?" Of course he was. The raven had heard every word of his joining process, even the interview with the stellar alphess, luna.

Idrian dipped his head in greeting. "I am Idrian, and it is a pleasure to meet you, Pala."

He said this with his eye on Jorn...what was that look on the other wolf's face? What vendetta did the younger male have...? He'd know soon...until then he'd lie low, and wait...and watch...he'd practiced this long...

Jorn's face twisted into a dark smile. "Don't get too used to Pala. She won't be staying." Pala glared at the male, her golden eyes narrowed.

"Sir Deacon said I could stay, so stay I shall, Jorn, and YOU can't do a damn thing about it, you filthy mutt." She ruffled her feathers, irritated, and offered Idrian an almost apologetic smile for losing her temper. Somehow Jorn always made her do that.

Re: chasing the darkness
Idrian couldn't help but give his own dark glare-the beta's tone made him nervous for the raven, who, he was certain, was more pleasant to be around than the dusky brute.

He nodded at Pala's expression. "The alpha's word is that-though the pack should not treat him as more than he is...I can see how the aid of a raven would be useful..." Indeed, it may've been salvation for his pack...once.

"All allies are welcome here, I would imagine."

Jorn returned the glares of the two creatures, his hackles raising slightly. "Neither of you should take that tone with me. I outrank the both of you."

Pala glared at jorn contemptously. "You're only beta because Sir Deacon wants to keep an eye on you, Jorn." She launched into the air as he lunged at her, intent on shredding her as he'd shredded the coyote.

Re: Chasing the darkness {{AW}}
Idrian snarled at the Beta's pounce, his old self returning. He didn't like what he saw in this one...he'd seen it once before.

"A lust for power is in you, Jorn...it will destroy the pack if you are not careful...if it does not destroy you first..."

The old male made a note to himself to be certain to keep a close watch on Jorn-and be sure the younger male didn't try anything...already he was protective of his new home, and the new pack of which he was a part.

"Rank is only worthwhile if you work for the good of the whole, Jorn. That is why Deacon is alpha here...that much I see already."

He was tense now, prepared to spring away as Pala had. He had a strong desire to speak more to the raven, assuming he could get far better information on the Deadwood lands from her than, say, from the beta who stood before him now.

((Heh. I did say all, so...now you get to meet deuce, too!))
Jorn glared at the older male. "The pack was meant to be mine! Luna and her lands were meant to be MINE!" Lips curled back from ivory fangs, a deep growl emitting from the male's throat.

Pala flew off in search of the alpha, to have him bring the crazed brute back to heel.

Deuce heard a male's snarl and she arched an eyebrow. Out of sheer curiosity, she followed the source of the sounds and watched the black male threaten the older one. She stood still, then realized the angry male must be the beta the raven pala had informed her of. Bicolored eyes danced witrh the anticipation of making more trouble as she slowly approached, her ivory pelt shimmering in the light. "greetings." Her voice was a seductive purr, an odd contrast to the angry growl of Jorn.

Idrian jumped lightly. He had been lost in his own rage...he was fully expecting a fight with Jorn, and didn't care if he lost...the beta was a danger.

But the femme had diffused the situation, for the moment, at the very least. His ear was on her and his eye on Jorn. He would take no risks.

Deuce studied the two males through bi-colored eyes. " I'm going to guess that you are Jorn." She looked at the other male, one she hadn't met yet and offered him a silken smile. "And you would be-?"

Jorn stared at the silken pelted fey, somewhat in awe of her graceful beauty, and her apparent omnipotence. Never did it occur to the ebon brute that the raveness would have spoken to the ivory femme first.

Deuce looked between the two males, an eyebrow cocked gracefully, awaiting her answer, the tip of her tail swaying slowly. Today wasn't a day where she would be b*tchy, today was her day to be sweet but inquisitive. But as usual, her mood could change in an instant.

"And you would be-?"

"Idrian." He replied flatly. He did not intend any foul tone and he didn't want to be taken as such. It didn't pass his attention that Jorn's focus had moved to the wolfess.

"Pardon me for not knowing-but if you could answer the same question for me, I would appreciate it..."

Stilted, perhaps. Wordy? He knew it when he said it. He enjoyed words-the power of language-it was an amusement when he let it be.

Again a memory. Again a sadness. Again a vestige of a little gray pup dancing at his forepaws-the word games...life, now gone...

He shook involuntarily and refocused. Here and now, Idrian, here and now. Nothing else is.

She smiled sweetly, bicolored optics dancing impishly. "Perhaps I don't wish to tell just yet." She grinned playfully, her tounge lolling out the side of her mouth. "And besides, what if I'm not of the deadwood pack?"

Jorns eyes narrowed. Suddenly, he knew why the enchantress was here. She was a spy from luna, sent to destry the pack that was rightfully his from within! With a snarl, he lunged at the lithe fey, cruel fangs bent on tearing the vunerable flesh of her thraot.

Intent on teasing idrian as deuce was, she didn;t failt o notice the sudden change in jorn;s demeanor, and when he lunged, she easilly dodged, knocking him over and sending him sprawling. Her playful manner vanished, to be replaced by ire, her eyes narrowed, and ears pinned back in warning, her head held high. She meant buisness.

Jorn leapt to his feet, snarling. He'd kill the snowy she b*tch for her daring! He began to cirlce, in his anger forgetting the presence of Idrian.

"Jorn! Jorn, what are you doing? Are you mad?" He demanded, hackles raised, fangs bared. He was again his old self, his power and demeanor returned...the attack had come without warning, but he was glad the femme was well capable of dodging.

He strode, snarling, into Jorn's circled, his head and ears lowered, but his tail raised. "Jorn-stop this madness..."

Jorn snarled at Idrian, refusing to adknowledge him with words. Golden eyes fixed hatefully on the snowy fey. Slowly, menacingly, he began to tighten his circle, trapping the fey against a boulder with no place to go.

Deuce snarled, lips curling away from sharp ivory fangs. "Jorn. If you care to live, you'll discontinue this madness." Her voice was frosty with rage, her back to the boulder. She chose to let him back her agaist it. Not so she'd have no where to go, but to have something protecting her back.

"JORN!" Idrian shouted again, his voice a rolling, angry bark. "Leave her be!"

He acted now as ever he had in youth-when he was the omega...when he was gamma before as now he was...he stood between a packmate-her facesious tone had not been lost on him-and besides...this was less than animal-an unprovoked attack on another wolf?

He remembered more clearly his own road, and he hated Jorn all the more at that moment.

"You would be a tyrant, were you let be so!"

He glanced to Deuce, "I will watch your back...do not let him trap you."

Jorn glared at the male, hating the both of them with every fibre of his being. "F*ck this sh*t. I'm outta here." Tail held high, hackles raised the brute stalked off, fury evident in his rolling gait.

Deuce slowly relaxed, her bicolored eyes on the retreating beta, ready to fight should he choose to turn back. After he was out of sight, she sat, hating how weak her legs seemed to be. A few months ago, she would have fought, and relished the fight. Now, her heart was racing with an emotion akin to fear, and she was having problems keeping her thoughts straight. Pack life had made her weaker, and she wasn't too happy about it.
