Least favorite system?
What is your least favorite system (console and/or handheld) of all time?

Mine would be the N-Gage. The reasons are as follows:
-Horrible launch lineup. Tomb Raider was probably the best, and that's not saying much, since it was a very clunky and outdated platformer even at that time.
-Side-talkin' on the Taco Phone.
-Opening it and removing the batteries to insert a game.
-Thus far, a majority of the games are ports of PS1 and GBA games. And more times than not, those ports have suffered in some way.
-The fact that it was marketed as a handheld you could use as a cell phone, when it was really just a cell phone that played higher-end games than most cell phones at the time.
-I don't think there's a single game that I'd buy the N-Gage to play.

Some of these problems were fixed by the N-Gage QD, but by then, it was already to

Re: Least favorite system?
game.com

It has promising titles that are a total letdown when you realize the screen only refreshes 3 times per second. Many of the more interesting games (Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Sonic in particular) are rendered virtually unplayable because of this. It was also released long after the original Game Boy while being vastly inferior in every way possible. What makes matters worse is that after the release of the Game Boy, there was the Game Gear, which was essentially a portable Master System. Following that there was the Turbo Express which was literally a portable Turbo Grafix. The game.com wasn't just a step back, it was several monumental lurches back.

But hey, it had a touch screen! Take THAT, DS!

Re: Least favorite system?
oh, the ds is hardly interesting hardware wise at first sight...

it has the double screen of Nintendo's own old game&watch (and frankly, looks the same), and a touch screen which wasn't a new idea at all...oh, and a microphone.

However, because it has a larger backing, it spawned some fresh game ideas (not all, and many games are of a rather scary similar concept).
In theory, everything the DS does is already possible on other consoles, and pc, but maybe drawing stuff with a mouse in a pc game wasn't considered very fun...for example.

the microphone btw, it's just there to try and publicly embarass you. :p

The most popular game on the DS is about as un-innovative as possible (mario)....
the latest game I have for it is Point Blank...which isn't an innovation either, but it does show guncon games are quite possible (and fun) on DS.

But I'm going horribly off-topic here.

My least favourite game system... this is a hard one. Ngage or game.com I wouldn't mention because I don't know them at all.
I don't think much of the Nintendo 64, but it still has a handful interesting titles.
Yet, looking at Jaguar, 3DO, PS1, Saturn, DC, PS2, GCN, XBOX or even CDI ...I'd rate them all higher than N64 =P

Re: Least favorite system?
Now you all expect me to say PS2 right? :p

True I don't like the console for various reasons:

1. It got overhyped, and it had a big negative influence on the Dreamcast's life
2. It's got the texturing power dating from 1998, it was a step back when compared to PC's of that age, in contrast with the DC, which was a step forward
3. The best games on PS2 in terms of jaggies, look like the worst games on DC. Another shame since it meant a step back.
4. No proper pal60 support for a couple of very important games. Another step back into the past.
5. It's the prime reason why a lot of games still look relatively crappy while they couldn't been so much more if they weren't made with the PS2 in mind.

Now apart from those negative points, I have to give it that it isn't the worst system at all, it's home to a lot of great titles and I am impressed what they've been able to do on this console :) . Even though those same impressive games would've been better on other consoles, but that's not part of this thread.

Worst system... I think it's the Nintendo Virtual Boy, played it once, about a year ago now, and after 5 minutes you'd get a headache. Even though it was fun having the honour of playing with the thing, it simply sucks.

Re: Least favorite system?
I'd like to even try it though (virtualboy).

but you're right, ps2 is comparatively weak. I have a few screenshots comparing the PC versions of MGS1 and 2... being respectively a PS1 and PS2 port, textures are the same as those systems. It's funny to see that the Metal Gear in MGS2 doesn't have any better textures than the one in MGS1 ;)

Re: Least favorite system?
Even though I too feel the PS2 was overhyped (I loves me some Dreamcast), it's still better than many systems on the market even today.

Hmm

Phillips CD-i

wtf were they thinking?

For a long time we thought maybe we were being a bit harsh....Then at the Classic Gaming Expo 2005 we got our claws on one.

we found ourselves saying

wtf were they thinking :p

Re: Least favorite system?
really? I kinda liked it.... FMV games were kind of popular at the time as well.
I liked chaos control, "that one pinball game", and the excellent versions of micro machines and pac attack (pac panic).

...but the price was a joke... and I think the fmv games required a really expensive add-on to an already expensive machine =P

I unfortunately (or fortunately, as the case may be) never played one of those. All I knew was that it had those evil Zelda games.

It's the worst system on the market today, it just has the best support and library. It's not the hardware that is superior, it's the marketing strategy and developer support, and its user base that has made it succesful.

It can push nice effects, but it can't even display a nice looking brick wall :b

I care not how powerful a console is, it's the support and library that MAKE the system.

Re: Least favorite system?
The two that spring immediately to mind are:

(1) the monochrome Game Boy, I laughed when I heard this one was coming out, I wasn't sure if they were entirely serious, as the mighty Lynx had (IIRC) just come out, which of course wipes the floor with it (in fact just every other handheld ever wipes the floor with it). I don't know why anyone would ever buy one. A monochrome game console? In 1989? Pathetic.

(2) the NES. I can't believe there are apparently people who collect the music for this system? What music? They're !@#$ square waves!!! And the games were nearly all atrocious. I couldn't get a C64 emulator for my GBA so I got an NES emulator for it. I downloaded all the good C64 games that were available in an NES version. 4 or 5 were good conversions, the rest were butchered beyond belief. In some cases even the ZX Spectrum versions were better. See amigan.netfast.org/opinions.txt for details of the specific games.

Nothing particularly against Nintendo, I like most of Nintendo's other systems, but these two are absolute shockers. Strangely enough they are two of their more successful systems. Ah well, most people will accept any old crap if it's marketed right I guess...

By the way I had an N-Gage too, that was a VERY disappointing machine...

The Game Boy came out a month prior to the Lynx, btw.

Re: Least favorite system?
that, and , if you judge the NES on the C64 ports it got, that's a bad judge ;)
better judge it on its own original games.

Re: Least favorite system?
A suprising of the classic NES games got their start somewhere else though. Dragon Quest first showed up on the MSX, and many of the more actioney titles were originally arcade releases. I'm not gonna go through each game that originated elsewhere since I'd need my own website for that, I'll just let my point stand as is.

Re: Least favorite system
I have to agree with DW that the Philips CD-i was a total bomb, but I think the one that takes the cake is the Pioneer LaserActive. First of all, it could not play any games by itself - it required 'Pac' units that ran around $700 a piece to play games (Sega Genesis & TG-16) that had been already released on consoles (there were very few 'laseractive' only games). Secondly, who had $1,700 to buy the system (including one of the PAC units) back in 1993?? Yes, it did/does play Laser disk movies. For $1700, I could almost make my own movie ;) (well, not really, but you get the picture).

I think this is my least favorite unit.

Re: Least favorite system
Yeah, that thing was pretty ridiculous. On the other hand, since its library was the same as the Genny's and the TG-16, you could still play very good games on it. You'd have to pay far too much to do it, but at least it's not like the CD-i which really didn't have ANY good games.

We're in total agreement regarding that price though. It's enough to make the PS3 look cheap.
