Davis Delivers “Pony Rock” and Plenty of Laughs

By Arien Rozelle
To watch 21 year old singer/songwriter Taylor Davis perform is to understand what it means to be entertained. Davis is not only a talented musician; he’s also a hilarious comedian whose humor (mostly self-depreciating) seeps out, both on and off the stage.

“I’m not very cool at all,” said Davis during a recent phone interview. “I’m 40% artsy-fartsy, 60% dork. But all musicians are dorks. We’re like ‘dude, that amp is so badass!’” he said.

Performing over 200 shows a year across America, Davis’ self-described dork status doesn’t seem to have hindered his music career thus far. He has three independently released albums under his belt including 2000’s “The Night that the Stars Looked Down,” 2002’s “Letting Go” EP and 2004’s “B-Sides & Happy Songs.”

As funny as Davis is, his songs take a more serious note, dealing most often with heartbreak and relationships. “I love the ladies,” he said. “Most of my songs are either about good times or different aspects of bad times with the ladies. I get this girl and then I fall in love with her. And I never tell her that I’m in love with her and then I get sad and write a song about it,” he said.

Davis even goes so far as to describe his music as “pony rock,” a phrase coined by his friend and fellow musician, Dan Brown. “It means soft rock, but emotional music. It’s singer/songwriter pop rock, or girl-rock,” he said. “It’s like ‘I’m sad, girls hate me’ kind of music.”

With a passionate on-stage presence and facial contortions that rival Jim Carrey’s, when Davis is on stage, you can’t help but be totally engaged in his performance. And although he’s played at venues like The Tribeca Rock Club and CBGB’s in New York and Miller’s in Virginia, he admits that he still has fears. “When I’m onstage I hope that the people are enjoying it and the bartenders aren’t pissed at me because there are only three people there and I’m thinking ‘God, I hope I can afford gas money after the show.’”

Proving that the life of a musician is not always filled with champagne and five star hotels, Davis sleeps in his car as a way to save money while he’s touring. On one particular night, he pulled over to a rest stop in Texas at 4 am and was trying to sleep, when he saw a suspicious situation in a nearby white pickup truck.

“I noticed this guy in the front of the truck with a video camera aimed down and there was a girl in the car with him,” he said. “They were… let’s say they were experimenting with each others’ bodies. Then the guy put the video camera in the back of his truck, made out with the girl for a while and then they drove off,” said Davis. A few seconds later a state trooper drove by. “It would have been hilarious if they got caught, but they didn’t,” said Davis with a disappointed laugh.

Currently working on a new album with producer Mark Addison, Davis said that he’s focusing all of his efforts into making this album great. “I’m having the time of my life recording this. I wanna do it right and I’m putting everything I’ve got into it,” he said, adding that he has plans to make a video and to heavily promote the album, which he expects to be released in early 2006.

And what if the music thing doesn’t work out? “I’d be in a gang, or I’d be a chef. But I can’t imagine a life without music,” Davis said.

“Or, wait. Maybe I’d be a ninja. I used to be really into Karate.”
