cost of living afloat
hello there tim....
40-50k seems alot for a 70 foot 1979 narrowboat, unless its something special...i suppose its that much cos youre buying your way past the mooring waiting list in london..i cant help you with the definition of residential mooring, but i can advise you NOT TO BUY THE FIRST BOAT YOU SEE!! beleive me there are plenty of other boats out there for lots less, and if you want something to d.i.y then the price comes down another step.. ps if you choose not to get a survey done you will really be sorry...good luck :smokin

Advice
Hi,

I am currently in a similar situation, renting a small place in London at extortionate rates. I have a 'good' job but I can’t bring myself to commit to a huge mortgage and having to 'live' this way for the next 30+ years just to cover monthly repayments/bills. So I have been seriously considering buying a narrowboat- for various reasons this seems to be a way in which I could regain some control over my lifestyle.

I have a few questions- apologies if these seem naive or simple but it’s all a bit of an unknown...

I've seen narrowboats varying vastly in price (ranging from 15000 to 90000+) Basically what is the difference here- I can see the obvious like size, level of luxury etc
I am not after a huge luxurious boat but would want something 'liveable' with toilet/shower/cooking facilities etc. Realistically, how much would I be looking at spending?

Also, there is going to be a learning curve here and while I realise maintenance will need to be carried out, I would initially be looking for something in a reasonably good state- i.e. not in need of immediate repairs. If this were the case roughly how much would I need to set aside for maintenance (per year?)? Apart from this and mooring fees, are there any 'hidden' costs?

Any advice at all would be very much appreciated I am reading as much as I can- it seems to be only 'fear of the unknown' which is preventing me doing this. If you want to contact me email is anne_aesthetic@hotmail.com

Many thanks & all the best.

Simon.
