Mars Matrix Impressions

Man, this game is impossible to play without the 30 ship code! Oh, wait, I guess I had been able to play decently with this game. It's still damn hard though.

I don't know about you, but I didn't beat my score, or even come close to matching it, for that matter.

I did, however, make it to Area 9 in Zanac. I hope this game isn't gonna bite me on the ass for suggesting it might be in the running for being the best NES shooter. I think I blew through 4 areas today. You never know how long an area will be, because some have only 1 ground base "boss", while others have up to three (maybe more). At first, whenever I'd beat a boss, i'd hope that was the last one for the stage, so I could make some progress. Now, I'm hoping they're not the last, because I don't want this game to run out too quick and be a repeat of Bangai-O/Contra/Super C/Lifeforce. Of course, I still have Zanac Neo on that set for more value... but I might like the buy the NES version of Zanac soon ... and the NES fan in me would like to be very proud of an old game for my favorite system.

Facilitypro Moderator (11/26/01 5:09 pm) Reply	Mars Bars I thought it was an excellent review. I liked how you talked about the different ways to play the game. Some of the descriptions of the bullets scared me (as will the sheer amount of bullets the first time you play level 6). I really like this statement: "Mars Matrix's levels aren't merely filled with bullets; they're designed with bullets" That's probably my favorite line in the whole review. And I read your about me page. I know what your name means :)

I was worried you'd say I'd have to do the whole thing over again ;) I can see a few things i might want to edit, but I think I'll sit on that for now. I think I might be getting better, enough to consider review a game like R-Type sometime. Thinking about that a few months ago was kind of scary, because I didn't think I'd be able to make the game sound as good as it is, but I think I might have a chance now. I played some Mars Matrix (what, you don't expect me to give a game 4 stars - a score I consider "insanely high" - and then just be done with it?) and beat my 3B score. I first got a score of over 170 billion, but I died early in the boss fight. Early enough, in fact, I didn't have a big combo by then, and I didn't think it would make THAT big a difference. CRAWLand1000 Registered User (12/4/01 9:44 pm) Reply	I LOVE FO! Man, was I pissed when I came home today! I found my 200+ billion score wasn't saved! The game only saves at the green screen after the title, so I must have turned the game off after the title screen. Well, you know what that meant: I had to try to regain that score. I was really sucking. I couldn't even beat my old score. Then, I got a score of 190 + billion. Later, I was sure I would totally blow away any score I got on that stage (I had a really great combo before the boss) but I blew it on the boss. I still got a score of 180+ billion. Finally, I managed to set a new high score for myself! It was 00214848071990 P.S. I actually screwed up on that run, so I know I could beat that score, too. In fact, I think I had a better performance up to the boss in that 180 billion run (although one thing happened that I'm not sure how to duplicate) so I probably could do quite a bit better than that. Facilitypro Moderator (12/7/01 1:33 am) Reply	Re: I LOVE FO! I didn't feel like playing R-Type Delta tonight, so I played though the first three stages of MDK2. Then I put Mars Matrix in. I didn't beat any of my scores, but I did get 843 billion on stage 4B, despite dying 2 or 3 times. My experience was only 17 million, too. It's runs like that that make me think 1 trillion points are possible.
Facilitypro Moderator (12/8/01 2:20 pm) Reply	Re: I LOVE FO! I broke 900 billion. On my first try today, I beat my old 4B score with something like 869 billion, and exp maxed out. Several tries later, I died once right at the beginning and once right before the bullet field. I had a really good run on the warship, though, with a combo of 6800 or so. Due to dying a few times before, my experience did not max. It was only 19.1 million, but my final score was 00902499454140.

Actually, I also have Zanac X Zanac for that purpose, and I did beat a level in that today. This may seem like a knee jerk reaction, but I think Zanac could very well be the best NES shooter I've played. Anyway, I beat your 4B score! And it only took me about one to two hours of play to do it, too! I sort of got my strategy from you - I was thinking, how could he be getting those insane scores if he actually dies? Then I had an inspiration. So far, I only had one good run with that strategy; othertimes, I would screw up somewhere or another. I DID maximize my experience on this run, too. That just about killed me to get that close and fall short. I had a couple other good runs too, with 903 bil and 927 bil. I'll try again later.

I'm pretty sure I can get at least another 100 billion, especially using my new strategy. It's...odd. I broke 1 trillion after about the 10th time using it, including restarts. Maybe I'll mess around with it a few more times before I leave. I went back to playing R-Type Delta tonight. I beat the 3rd stage on Hard (with the RX), and made it to the last checkpoint of stage 4 before I stopped. I want to play MDK 2 again, also.

Actually, since my performances haven't been too hot, I've been trying to tweek my strategy a bit. I have a couple options open to me, but it's hard to tell which has the highest scoring potiential when it's so hard to put together a perfect run (and playing for score is much harder than playing for survival). Speaking of shooters, last night I made it to area 11 in Zanac, which is insane.

My score would put me at number 14 on that list, yours would be at 12, I think (well, then that would knock me down to 15. Still, we'd both rank!). Some seem kind of strange. Like, look at stage 3B's scores. Most people got around 300 billion... then, all of a sudden, #2's at 800 billion... then #1's at almost 3 trillion! Huh?? Seems hard to believe. CRAWLand1000 Registered User (12/19/01 1:42 pm) Reply	I LOVE FO! I still hard time imagining a score of 2 trillion, mainly because the experience maxes out. Even with a higher base score before the big warship, even maximizing the experience sooner, it'll still hit that peak where the score starts growing linearly instead of cubicly, and the crazy rate the score had been growing at will drop. Even with a score of 600 billion (which might even be beyond my reach) by the warship, I have a hard time imagining a score of over 1.5 trillion, at least without coming up with some new tricks. Anyway, i have been still improving my scores, but the most notable one is for 3A. I maxed out my experience, and along with that got a score over 447 billion. I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!
