The scouring of the shire
Rose Brandybuck wandered along the Brandywine, she absalutely *hated* the way that Ludo had very nearly taken over, all were forgetting that they still had a mayor ... yet it seemed that it wasn't just Ludo doing all this, he'd never been bright enough to skeam this all up ... yes, there must be someone else, but who??There had been a funny man walking around in a coulered cloak, almost like Gandalf, yet not quite ... Rose wished with all her heart that her cousin, Merry, would come back ... he'd always been brave, knowing what to do and when.... She never really believed that they were all dead, but it seemed to her that memories were fading, and even those like her were giving up hope on them ever coming back.

ooc: well, there you go, typos and misspellings included... lol

Re: The scouring of the shire
((Hmmm... this would involve me making a new character, which would involve thinking ;) ... hmm, I wonder if there would be a reason for me to be visiting the Shire as the halfbreed? *thinks* Wait! I think I got it! I'll be visiting my mum's kin!))

Merily Thranduiliell stopped her horse as she reached the hill looking down into Buckland. Something didn't seem right- it didn't look at all the way her mother had described it... The woods were still there, and the river as well, but the town itself had a dirty quality to it. Not being able to put her finger on the exact reason, Meri shrugged, made sure her daggers were secure in their sheaths, and urged her horse back on with a pat and a whisper in elvish.
She decided to follow the course of the river towards the town, figuring she could both water her horse and give herself time to figure out the mystery.
As she rode closer, the forest to her one side and the river to the other, she noticed a small figure slowly strolling along the bank of the river. Seeing that she had little to fear from the solitary figure, she decided to hail them to maybe find out where her kin would be.
Meri (attempting her best at common, which she hadn't spoke in centuries): Well met! Could I bother to ask where I could find the Brandybuck kin?
The figure startled, and turned towards the halfbreed perched on her horse. As the figure moved as if to flee, Meri noticed that it was a halfling girl.
Meri: Hold! Please!
*Meri dismounted her horse and slowly walked towards the girl, bowing as she got close to show that she meant no harm*
Girl: Who are you? *What* are you? You look like a hobbit lass but... fey...Did the strange man send you?
Meri, of course had no idea what man she meant, or if she was even translating the girl's words correctly, but she tried to explain herself.
Meri: I am Merily Thranduiliell of the Forest Mirkwood. I am looking for my mothers kin, would you know where the Brandybucks would be found?

((There ya go, Michelle! I like this plot idea! :D ))

Re: The scouring of the shire
*Daisy was on the border of Hobbiton. Not wanting to come home, but Legolas made her. She took a deep breath and made a clicking noise to get Midnight to move again. There were few hobbits out this day gardening, buying or selling things. Eating, drinking, doing the usual daily hobbit thing. She decided to go to her home Tuckborough. She wanted to see her family. All the little hobbit children came by to see Daisy and ask how she was.*

Lily: Daisy! You're back! It's wonderful to see you again!

Daisy: Lily? Is that you?

Lily: *smiling* Yes.

Daisy: My how you've grown! I haven't seen you in ages. Aule I miss being home.

Lily: We've missed you and your stories. Of dragons, evil wizards, and other things.

Daisy: Well... I wish I had a new adventure story for you, but I must go see my family.

Lily: Mind if I come with you?

Daisy: No.. Not a problem at all. Let me just un mount my horse and the three of us can walk.

*Daisy unmounts her horse, Midnight, and stands on the ground. She stretches, and yawns a bit.*

Lily: Tired, Daisy?

Daisy: *trying to stifle the yawn* A bit. My word, child you've grown up to my hips.

Lily: *laughing* Well I do take good care of myself.

*Daisy, Lily, and Midnight all walk towards Tuckborough. The girls were laughing, Midnight was eating her oats. They walked through the town square.*

Veet, who had fallen behind, reined her horse up beside her sister, whom she found talking to an unknown hobbit.

Veet: Meri, thel nin, must you ride so fast? And who is this new friend of yours? Have you found directions to our destination?

((ooops! I forgot about you, sister dearest! ;) ))
Meri: You know how much I love to feel the wind in my hair, love! Wasn't it you who was ahead this morning? Anyway, she seems to be a bit frightened of us for some reason... Veet! Why do you have your whip out, no wonder she's frightened! (;) ))

Rose looked Meri up and down nervously, she was an outsider, after all. "I am rose brandybuck, who is your mother? I may know where she is."

Veet looks at the whip in her hands, grins disconcertingly, and hides it behind her back.

Veet: Oh, there's nothing frightening about me at all, is there, thel vellwain nin? *looks down at the hobbit* Hello, I am Veet Thranduiliell. I see you've met my sister.

Re: The scouring of the shire
Meri: Mae Govannan, Rose. I doubt you may know of her, as she left this world almost five centuries ago, but her name was Ruby Brandybuck. All I know about my kin is that they reside in Buckland, am I in the right place?

Rose: Aye. *thinks for a second* Five *centuries*?

*Meri nods sorrowfully*
Meri: Alas, she was a mortal, so I never learned much of her kin, or why she truly left Buckland. She always had so many nice stories about it... which I can't seem to connect with this dreary place. Has so much here changed over the years?

Veet looks around. She frowns and absently toys with the hilt of the sword belted at her waist.

Veet: Indeed, I agree with you, thel nin. This place little resembles the Shire our dear mother spoke of so often. What has happened here?

Re: The scouring of the shire
Rose: I no not what is going on. It was a plentifull harvest, yet Familys don't have enough food((which would be quite a bit, w/ or w/out loss;) )) There is one man, he is coulerfull. Almost like Gandalf, yet not quite...

Suddenly Rose looked up, and, as if just understanding what had been said, said.

Rose: Mirkwood? Bilbo mentioned Mirkwood ... He always was odd, going off w/ dwarves, bound to run into trouble, and trouble he ran into! I say, Dissapeared on his birthday. Then Frodo left, w/ Merry, Pippin and Sam. Poor Merry, he always knew what to do. Got to close w/ sam in the end, though. They say he's dead. I don't believe such things...

Re: The scouring of the shire
Meri: A man... like Gandalf... I only know of two others that are like him... but *shrugs* all I know are tales told around court. But we are from Mirkwood, and we remember that bunch of dwarves. More trouble than they were worth, from what I saw.
*thinks for a moment*
Meri: Frodo... Merry... why do those names sound so familiar? Oh! I was visiting the forest of Lorien when a strange group passed through-

Veet: Right! How could we forget them, especially that one halfling lad. *winks at Meri*

Meri: *grins* You had your eye on a different one, remember, love?

Rose: You know of them, then? Tell me, are they all right? We have not heard news of them since they left!

Meri: *sigh* Alas, we have not seen them in months, but when we parted company they were in good health, though mourning the loss of one of their companions.

Rose: Companions?

Veet: Yes, when we saw the halflings, they were in the company of two men, a dwarf, and our *charming* elder brother.

Meri: I still don't see why Father sent *him* off to Imladris, when we were just as capable of going. *pouts*

Veet: Such unfairness. Let's just hope the boy's still in one piece, and the company is still alive and well.

Meri: *nods* Aye to that. But what has me worried is that there has been no news here of the company and the halflings.

Rose: We are all worried about them, but with the lack of food and the strangeness going on, we have not been able to search for them or ask for news.

Veet: *looks at her sister* I do believe we might have to be the ones to find the halflings.

Meri: But what of the rest of them? Something is obviously not right here... but the thought of the young halflings in danger pulls at my heart.

Re: The scouring of the shire
*Daisy and Lily reach Tuckborough. Daisy's foster family was outside working in the garden. Daisy stood there with her horse, took a deep breath and walked up to the house she grew up in. Her mother and father ran up to her and asked if she found Pip. If so, they wanted to know how he was.*

Daisy: Mother, father, Peregrin is fine.

Eglatine: Come, Daisy. Let us go tie up your horse... Lily?

Lily: Yes Mrs. Took?

Eglatine: Would you like to come have tea with us?

Lily: Oh yes, madam!

Eglatine: Then come, child.

Lily: Yes madam.

*Daisy, Lily, and Eglatine go to tie up Midnight. After that is done, the three of them go inside to have afternoon tea with Paladin Took.*

Veet: Indeed, I agree with you, Meri. What can we do, though?

Meri: Hmmm... We need to find out what's at the root of this evil.

Veet: Oh, how insightful, dear sister. *rolls eyes* And how do you propose to do that?

Re: The scouring of the shire
Rose: well, if you want to know, the trouble all started when Frodo sold his house to Ludo. Ludo went around as if *he* was the Mayor, forgeting that he wasn't. But now ... it seems that there is someone else.. I don't know who, though. It all started w/ that Frodo ... he had the best house in the shire, and he sold it to the worst Hobbits in the shire ..... *sighs* oh well, I just hope it dosn't get worse. This medow, *she waved her arm across a patch of dead and dying flowers.* children would run in it, it never dried up, save on the driest of years. And this year is not drie! It doesn't make sense, I say!

Re: The scouring of the shire
Meri: I agree! There should be no reason for it to be like that if the weather has been fine. Now this strange man you speak of, could you tell us more about him?

Rose: That's the funny part- no one ever really gets a good look at him. But from what I have seen, he appears to be a lot like Gandalf, in appearance anyway... Do you know who Gandalf is?

*Veet and Meri nod*
Veet: We have seen the wizard a few times in our lives, but there are few even closely resembling him.

Rose: *nods* Yet this man is alike enough in appearance to be one of his kin. They even wear the same sort of robes, only instead of grey, his are more of a ... well, it's hard to tell. The look white, but only for a second, if you follow.

*Meri and Veet look at each other, as if to silently share their thoughts*
Meri: But it can't be him! How could he know of this land?

Veet: I do believe we may have our dear wizard friend to thank for that. He was the one who told *us* about our halfling kin, if you remember.

Meri: *sigh* That would fit all too well.

*Rose looks from one sister to the other*
Rose: You mean you know who it is? Then maybe you can stop him and make him leave!

Veet: We only have an idea, but if it's true-

Meri: It might end up being more difficult to be rid of him than anyone could have thought.

*Veet nods sadly*

Rose: If only Merry were back! He may not be that much help, but at least we'd not be worried about him.

*Meri bows her head and closes her eyes. After standing silent for a few moments, she looks to the halfling*
Meri: The lad is fine- let that weight off your shoulders.

*Veet gives her sister an unbelieving look*
Rose: H-he is? How can you tell?

Meri: Such is the gift of a strong Healer. Once you see one's spirit, it is hard for them to leave your thoughts.

*Veet raises an eyebrow*
Meri: You wouldn't understand, sister love. *Smiles, then to Rose* Just have faith in him. He will be safe.

Re: The scouring of the shire
Meri: *smiles* I am not so much an elf as you would think. For one thing, a pure elf would probably have never made herself seen to a halfling. Besides, I am your kin, how could I not try to comfort you?

Rose: How... did you-?

Meri: That would be my elven hearing. *grins* What say you show us into town, so that my sister and I could get settled in. We do need to find a way to be rid of this evil, after all.

Rose: Not to be inhospitable, but there aren't really many places to stay in town, what with the changes and all... but there might be a place in the inn. *shakes her head* No one is ever going to believe that in this time, there are two elves claiming to be kin.

Veet: But two half-elves willing to get rid of this evil. *strokes the hilt of her sword* Now what about that inn?

*Rose shakes her head in disbelief, but leads them in the direction of Buckland*

Veet: I should think that a warrior and a healer would be a considerable addition to whatever force you have already to battle this evil...

Rose: Force? What do you mean?

Veet: Do you mean to say that you have no one to fight here?

Rose: Well, there are the Sherrifs, but they seem to have fallen under the dark influence.

Veet: Are you saying that I'm the only person in the Shire right now who can wield a sword??

Meri: Hey, I can wield one.

Veet: *rolls eyes* Yes, and drop it on your foot.

Meri: I only did that once!

*Meri sticks her tongue out at her sister*
Meri: Besides, you know I'm so much better at being sneaky and using my daggers than with a huge sword!

Veet: Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say. :rolleyes

Meri: *pouts* So, you say that there's an inn in Buckland that we can stay at?

Rose: If it is still in business. We haven't had many visitors lately. Ah here we are.

*The three are now standing in front of a worn gate*

Re: The scouring of the shire
((lol, It doesn't matter where it is. Buckland works! ... do they ever even mention an inn in Buckland? :) ))

Meri: Thank you so much, Rose! *she pats the halfling on the shoulder, as Veet knocks on the door*

*from inside the door, they hear a thud, then a man's voice*
Voice: What? Who's there?

Meri: We'd like a room! Is there any available?

*the door slowly opens, and a male halfling peeks out*
Hobbit: We don't- what's this? Two elves wanting a room? I've never heard of that!

Veet: *sighs* No, good sir, we are half-elves. We have kin who live in these parts.

*The hobbit does not look convinced*

*Being as she is the only one of the two barefoot, Meri steps in front of Veet, and points at her none-too-elven feet*

Meri: Is that proof enough for you? Please, we are weary from the journey and would like a place to rest. We could even hunt, if you need food for your tables.

Veet: *Under her breath* More like *I* would hunt...

*Meri gently elbows her sister in the ribs as she walks back behind her, in order to take the horses from Rose, and let Veet handle the business deal*

*The innkeeper, either out of pity or wanting their pay, finally opens the door all the way, and steps out*

Hobbit: All right, you two can stay here for as long as you need. The stables are around back. Follow me.

*The three girls follow the innkeeper to the stables. As Meri and the innkeep brush down the horses and remove the tack, Veet turns to Rose*

Veet: You didn't tell us the innkeep was so secretive! Are things really that bad around here to warrant losing custom in order to keep your door bolted?

Rose: *hangs her head* Unfortunately. It never used to be like this, and it's even worse over in Hobbiton. I was just hoping that because you are small females, he wouldn't see you as a threat, and he'd let you stay.

Veet: *frowns but holds her tongue* At least we have a place to stay. Once we drop our stuff off in our room, could you perchance take us to see this... Lotho?

Rose: *gasps* You couldn't... why?... you want to meet with him?

Veet: He's that bad? But no, I just want to spy on him first to see what he's up to.

Rose: Oh... that's a bit better. But it's dangerous- there are evil men everywhere, it seems!

Veet: Don't worry, I'm sure no one would catch me. I am used to difficult scouting. This might just be fun! *grins*
