The Chaser of Moons
(This is a character development thread; please feel free to join in.)
The wind was bitter and unkind. The soft pink cheeks of young Ara Latinon were rudely stung agian and agian by the driveing rain. S did her best to stagger up the muddy streets of Bree. Her destination was uncertain, but her hopes were that whatever venue was open at this hour of night was at least a warm one.
Just then, the sky let go with a cold and lonesome thunder-rumble. Ara stopped and looked up at the lighting-battle above her; she pulled her cloak around her tighter. Struggleing, she trudged through the muddy mire to get to that glimmer of hope, that flickering light just down the street...what did the sign above the door say? She couldn't make it out, but the figurine adorning the weatherbeaten sign was that of a horse.
Latinon finally reached the door of the venue and practicly fell in the door. She was exhausted. After 2 days of traveling with no food and little more than a patch of grass for a pillow, the Half-Elven young woman was more than ready for a good meal and a warm bed. None of the occupants of the place offered her a hand up...but she didn't mind. She was too proud to have taken a hand-up even if it had been offered.
She stood and brushed her cloak off, gathered herself with her usual aire of mystery, and strode galantly to the bar. Once there, she seated herself on a stool and ordered a pint. Even if she didn't drink, one had to keep one's image...
a cloaked figure sat in the back smoking pipe-weed...black leather was the cloak, red-eyes gleamed in the fire-light...a half -pint of stout and a dish of venison and potatoes was set before her. The cloaked figure was an Uruk-hai with flaming red-hair who took off the cloak and took a long sip of the dark ale....she watched the arrival of the Elvish stranger and grinned , her fangs and amber eyes surprisingly alarmed non of the patrons here, they went on drinking, eating, smoking and talking loudly....

Re: The Chaser of Moons
Ellienad Telcontar shivered violently under the log she had taken for shelter. It kept out most of the rain, but did nothing about the cold wind that sliced through all her clothing. Huddling even farther back, she curled up into a surprisingly little ball. Bringing her hands up to her mouth, she breathed on them with lips that were almost blue from the cold. But even her breath was cold. The wind gusted again and again, each knifeblade of cold reminding her how poorly she had chosen her resting place. She knew she should get out of the wind, but if she tried to find a new shelter now she'd get soaked.
Sighing, she forced herself into the blinding rain. She was instantly soaked. Peering around uncertainly, she looked for a better place to spend the rest of the night. Looking down the hill, she saw rooftops. There'd be some shelter there, although Men weren't usually willing to open their doors after dark. Gathering her wet cloak around her, she stumbled down the hill towards the town.
At the town, all the doors were shut tight. Thunder rumbled overhead. Stopping at the first house she came to, she knocked on the door just as thunder boomed overhead. She called out, but her voice mingled with the wind and was lost.
Sighing, she stumbled around to the lee side of the house and curled up on the doorstep.
Re: The Chaser of Moons
Through the haze of thick smoke, a dark, eerie figure caught the attention of Latinon. Thier eyes met for a moment, and the act sent a chill down Ara's spine...that or the fact that she was drenched with rain.
She pretended to take a sip of ale and then moved away from her spot at the bar. Takeing up residence by the fire, Ara took off her cloak to reveal an amazing light-and-dark tunic of Mithril. The rest of her outer layer of clothing was made of this also, and styled in the same black/white pattern. The white, or silver, looking part of the mithril gleamed and glimmered in the firelight. Even after months without polishing, the armor was still breathtakeing.
The greedy looks of the venue's inhabitants didn't settle well with Ara...they had thier minds running as to how much her precious armor would sell for, and Ara didn't feel like letting them kill her to find out. Therefore, she grabbed up her cloak, tossed the allotted amount of fee for the ale to the proprietor, and strolled out the door.
Immediatly, she was stung on the cheeks, hands, and eyes again by the unrelenting rain. She adorned her damp cloak and pulled it ever closer to her body. Then, after doing so and looking up the street and down, she decided this wasn't a place she'd like to stay. Therefore, she started back towards the way out of town. Halfway there, at the first house, to the side, she caught a figure out of the corner of her eye.
Being a cautious, but kindhearted elf, she moved over and called out, "You there! Are you quite alright?"

Ellie sat up and glanced at the Elf in front of her. "I'm f-fine thanks," she stuttered, "j-just a bit cold and wet." She stood up wearily. "I suppose you want me to move along..." She started limping down the street.

"Cold and wet, yes, I see..."
Ara felt bad. Her cloak was much nicer than the girls, and probably warmer and less damp as well.
"Miss, please...please wait."
When the girl stopped, Ara strode up to her and took her own cloak off, and offered it to the girl. "My armor is enough to keep me insulated. You need this more than I. Take it...I beg of you. This is all I called to you for, not for you to 'move along'."

Re: The Chaser of Moons
Ellie glanced at the cloak, then up at the Elven girl's face. "All right, thank you." She took the offered cloak and swung it about her shoulders. "Is there anything I could do in return?"

Re: The Chaser of Moons
Ara thought for a moment...she didn't really need anything, and the girl didn't look like she would have had much to barter...
"Hmm...Let me see. That is a fine Hobbit-handmade cloak, a very hard to part with...but...I could manage to part with it, if you can manage to travel with me for a spell."
Then another though occured to Ara...she was a wanderer, a traveling writer for hire and had no destination for one to accompany her to.
"However...I am headed no place imparticular, but if you are, then I shall accompany you as your protector. Pardon my frankness, but you look as if you could use one...unless...I'm mistaken?"

Re: The Chaser of Moons
*Their conversation is interrupted by loud abnoxious singning.*
"The rain will fall, the sky will rumble,
the sea will roar, the mountains crumble!
I'll still be here, singing again.
Under sunshine, under rain!"
A young woman standing only five-and-a-hlaf feet tall, dressed in white clothes, silver jewelry, muddy boots, and carrying a wooden staff, danced through the streets, seemingly unaware of the terrible wheather.
"Ah, hello there!" she called to them. "And how goes the day for all of you? I just got into town. I'm staying the night, for tomorrow I go to the Shire!"
"Who are you?" Ara asks.
"Why, that all depends on who you ask!"
"I'm asking you."
"Oh, really? Then, just call me Silver."

Re: The Chaser of Moons
Ellie glanced at the Orc. "Um, no thanks, JUhudazgKhan," she stumbled over the name. Turning back to Ara, she replied, "I can fight well enough, thanks, but I'm a lot better at running. I can outrun any horse, save only Shadowfax and his brethen."

Re: The Chaser of Moons
Suddenly Ara had the feeling she had stumbled into more than what she'd bargined for with this town.
Turning back to the young girl, she spoke, "Understood, Miss, but if you do ever need anything else, my name is Ara Latinon, and my bow is yours."
With that, she turned to the Uruk-hai, "JudazgKhan, is it?" Ara wasn't ever one to mingle with peoples of the darker side of things, but..."The weather is unkind, and a warm room does sound inviting. I shall take up your offer, Madam."
"And you?", she called out to the other woman. " 'Silver', was it? What say you? Shall you join us?"
Re: The Chaser of Moons
The she-uruk gazed at Ellie...I won't bite....but I respect your decision....you are most welcome to get out of this weather...and running is what most Uruk-hai do ....we eat miles in our battle-runs...enough talk of such, I say we return to a warm fire and good pipe-weed!....oh and maybe some more supper ....

JudazgKhans room was large and comfortable....there were 3 beds ....supper was roast duck and sweet potatoes...a rice custard was desert served with pale sweet wine with bread, cheese and apples...the pipe-weed was wonderfully potent...the she-uruk had a porcelian tub in the corner with buckets of hot steaming water...towels and appricot scented soap and a curtain for privacy....the fire place flickered warmly. All those years of Army life said the She-uruk, she grinned...I did my share of that...bathe, rest get a good nights sleep...I will order more hot water if you need it....

"Madam, your hospitality is unsurpassed."
After a hearty meal and an ample dessert, Ara sat back as the others smoked thier pipe-weed (she never touched the stuff). She took advantage of the warm bath, and spent at least an hour just soaking.
She was in the middle of getting dressed when she heard a woman's voice calling from outside...
"Uh...JudazgKhan? I think someone is calling for you. A woman. Outside."

Silver looked out the window. "If I remember correctly, and I usually do, than that is the voice of my young neice, Daisy." A look of concern came to her eyes. "But, what would she be doing in Bree now?"

Daisy: *stuttering from the cold* Th-thank you W-wolfie. They say a dwarf is supposed to be immune to cold. But me... Nope. Won't happen. Although only god knows why my teachers made me wear my princess outfit in the cold. I guess they think it's warm in other places like Windigate.
