Watching the horror
Disaster strikes and the artist voices fall silent. A poll on CNN indicated 75% of Americans support "the war."

Unfortunately I gave my rose colored glasses to a friend and am left unprotected. I wonder how many people died as I sat in my comfortable home and typed this.

Re: Watching the horror
Reminds me of Regan's approval ratings. I never knew a soul who approved of him...I don't know anyone in favor of the war.

But don't you feel your hands are tied? Once again, I will be damned if I don't support our troops....Bush is an idiot who has single handedly destroyed the credibility of this country but that is not their fault.

I hate this...all of this.

Support our Troops
I will come out of this post looking like an alien from outer space. You'll hate me. Not my intend and I apologize...but my dampening circuitry is out-of-order.

Who are our troops, and why do they follow the orders of a moron? The man running our country (elected by us) is an immature Texan-type with a tiny dick (just guessing) who completely snubs anyone who disagrees with him in the slightest. This guy is without a doubt underqualified to run a shift of garbage collectors...yet there he is...mispronouncing every word and ordering the death of thousands of Iraqi's for no reason other than he wants the Bush family name not to be tarnished.

Why don't they remind us that the reason we know Saddam has major weapons is because WE gave them to him to fight the Iranians? Woops. Forgot that fact...

I can't say I support our troops...because I support human life. If I support our troops isn't it like saying I support "death to Iraqi's?" No...I support human life. I despise killing.

There is a better way. Bomb Iraq with food. Bomb all "unfree" countries with food. Then we can be proud. But you know that. Gak. I am tired of society.

Sorry for the rant...I'll stop now. Before the FBI come knocking at my door. Hmmm. Didn't used to have to worry about that did we!?

Re: Support our Troops
I understand what you're saying DJ and that is why I feel so tied in this.

I support our troops because they are the sons of my friends. They are people who pledged to serve this country. I don't know what I'd do in their place.

I know from talking to Vietnam vets how torn many were. I imagine these kids are equally as torn.

What would you do? Would you throw grenades at your own countrymen?

I don't know what I'd do. I like to think I'd stand up for what I believe. It isn't so easy though, is it? We have the examples before of young men leaving homes and family to go to Canada. Of being imprisoned. Court martialed.

These young men signed up for a variety of reasons. See the world, the ads say. Go to college. Most never thought about go to Iraq and potentially die.

The troops are the individuals....reconsider DJ....Bush is a madman (I almost said manniac) but these kids are our sons and brothers.

Re: Security

I have reason to doubt that this man is the true "brains" of this operation...

I know this may sound lecturely, Damnit Jim but consider being thankful that your military follows orders - anarchy is far more terrifying than people often fancy. Imagine the U.S. military divided into smaller armies, each a sect of its own under radical leadership - each inheriting whatever weapons were at hand at the moment of division. Imagine this completely.

The warriors of both sides follow an evidently insane command, or die as deserters. The American military will come back to a shame far greater than the Viet Nam vets did, yet they have fulfilled their duty word for word, rhetoric for rhetoric. The Iraqi soldiers are no different - simply human beings who also feel they are serving their people, and will face the humiliation of defeat, despite being ordered to carry out a hopeless defence. I feel very sorry for the soldiers of both sides: they cannot be blamed for this, but bear the brunt of the shame anyway.

The commander-in-chief is clearly not the current American leader. A gap of 30 or more IQ points either way is known to make one person incomprehensible to the next. Bush is surrounded by advisors who, for the most part, have IQs of 40 to 50 points higher than his - he cannot possibly comprehend their reasoning. Thus he follows their advice tightly. They are leading the country in the direction of their choice, whether intentionally or not (I feel the prior). That said, these leaders are going by material gathered by the CIA, which, as we all know, can be trusted for their every action, from major drug deals to rigged elections.

In short, I support the soldiers but not the war.

Re: Watching the horror
Quickly quickly! Put these back on!!

And for crying out loud, turn off the frigging news.

It's all bullshit.

I am against tyranny and I believe that the leadership of many an Arab country is rotten and corrupt. I don't think anyone would disagree with that. All USA had to do was be patient and gather international support for the removal of Saddam. Not war. Not God damned greed for oil. But honor and diplomacy.
I don't understand why the rush? In the middle of global war protests, it just doesn't make sense. All right men, lets kill some Iraqis right now, quickly, and lets unleash the Turks onto the helpless Kurds, now now now. Why? Because Iraq is a dangerous threat to its neighbors and to ourselves, because Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. But don't worry, it will be a short and quick war. Why? Because Iraq doesn't have any significant weapons to speak of. Oh shit, did they just fire back? You're kidding? Where did they get those missiles? Sure, they landed in the desert, but damn, they weren't supposed to have any weapons to start with!
God curse the stupid arrogance of Bush.

Re: Watching the horror
A country is being invaded and no one can stop it.

When Iraq invaded Kuwait the whole world protested against it and the invasion was quickly stopped.

When USA invaded Iraq the whole protested against it but to no avail.

USA follows no rules of diplomacy, no international considerations. It is the most powerful and most unhindered country on the planet.

More significanly, USA controls a media machine that feeds the people of the world what to think and what to believe. History is created on the spot, by the camera men and reporters of CNN and the like. No time for thought, for reflection, for assessment. Truth is trampled upon with the forceful roar of USA's selfish needs. The weapons industry, the oil industry, is all held for the most part in the hands of American private sector leaders and governmental leaders. We are all its USA's mercy.

No, we try to resist, but there is a huge mismatch in strength and capacity. Humanitarians are swimming against the tide, their efforts drowning in the over abundance of greedy warmongers. When everyone wants a piece of the pie, moral standards crumble.

Re: Watching the horror
The US government routinely interferes in foreign governments, toppling elected rulers and installing military dictators (Pinochet comes to mind), always to the immediate benefit of the US, and the equally immediate detriment of the local citizenry.

All Arab governments are not crooked, anymore than all western governments are....hmmmmm...that's not saying much is it? The idea that the entire world needs to be run under a western style democracy is political propaganda. Muslims do not hate us for our freedom or our fabulous way of life. They hate us because we try to obliterate their culture, we export our way of life to their countries, our governments manipulate theirs, we take and take and take and when they stand in the way, we overthrow them.

Canada is divided on our official position on the war in Iraq. Some scream that we will suffer the wrath of America for not supporting them, joining them in the 'liberation' of the Iraqi people (yes, because that's the REAL reason for the invasion). They jump up and down about how if Canada were threatened, the US would defend us right away. Of course they would - it's in their best interest...or rather, they would IF it was in their interest. But we're Canada...the only government we fear might actually invade us is...well...the US. These people are the same one's who forgot that a US senator suggested that the US military occupy Canada in the event that the province of Quebec votes yes for separation. Ex-fucking-cuse me?

The moment it becomes a 'smart' economic move (for our oil, our water, our natural gas, our timber, diamonds, gold and clean air) the US government will be knocking down our door.

I like you folks as individuals, but your government scares the shit out of me.

Re: Watching the horror
I have so much I could add to that post, Blue. A better time would be at a pub.

Let's just say that I very upset with the American people, who by a wide majority, support this "action." Why they support it would be an interesting debate. But the WHY is basically less important in the short term than the fact that they DO support it.

blisslessly,
Thank you for the note. It cheered me up. I tried to send a response but it said you haven't activated your inbox!? Anywho...thanks.

With great sadness...I add this...

Edited to add:

Well, damnation. This entry was written by an American teacher (and apparently the entry is now protected and I can't even get to it). She had an Iraqi student who, with his family, has now disappeared. The suggestion being that they have been at least sequestered by the American government....

We're the "good guys" or so we're told. We aren't supposed to play that way.

Re: Watching the horror
Hey DeShaz. I wanted to check out that site, but apparantly I have to be 'logged in' and I need an 'account code.' Me stooopid, don't know how to get one.
Ditto for DJ, me stooopid, don't know why I can't receive messages.

Meanwhile, the American and British invaders of Iraq are busy 'freeing' and 'liberating' the Iraqi people. The double talk is nauseating.
