themed dances
first of all, sorry if i posted this wrong, im not really sure what im doing
next, im really excited about the dances, i love dressing up and dancing! but i was wondering if anyone could tell me what the governor's ball is. Is it just a formal dance, similar to prom, or is it supposed to be a real governor's ball set in the colonial era?

although most dances are totally up to interpretation and the colonial era spin on the dance would be interesting...typically the governor's ball is usually a bit more formal...sort of like a prom...

I almost forgot, the building where the dances are held, can be VERY hot, especially the dance floor....you might want to keep this in mind when deciding on your costumes...I typically try to work shorts into my costume some how so that I am at least semi-comfortable...

I'm a 2005 Humanities Governor, so I thought I'd also add my thoughts.
The dances are the huge, fun event at the end of every week. You get to hang out and dance with the people you've just met, and see how everyone has interpreted the theme of the dance. It's a great way to get to know people outside of classes and your halls. Since the dance is in the Commons and EVERYONE is there, even though there is lots of space, it does get very hot. I advise girls not to wear long dresses or skirts, but no matter what, everyone will be sweating, and that just has to be accepted.
Re: themed dances
I'd guess most of the students dress up in some level of costume for the dances. But certainly not all. Here's a pic from the Bahama Bash last year:
Some folk aren't dressed up at all, but look sorta tropic-y by association. More pictures, of course, are also available: linkage. (We gave out the leis.)
Here's a pic from the Black and White dance (which we are doing again):
You can see some wore fancy black and white dresses; others wore t-shirts and shorts that were black and/or white. Formal or totally casual, it made for a neat effect. More pictures.

Yeah, like Big D (Danny) said, it does tend to be sort of prom-ish. Not to say that you can't have fun with your outfit... creativity is always encouraged.

I usually wear a more semi-formal/cocktail dress, personally....like Big D said, it gets hot...short dresses are more comfy
Also...to people who are thinking they don't really have something to wear to the dances....don't go out and spend a bunch of money...I usually borrow from other girls on the hall for atleast one dance...so don't sweat it.

Awww.. thanks, Jen!
Yes, the music is played by a "DJ" (that'd be me). It does tend to cover a broad mix of styles: dance, techno, hip-hop, rap, country, swing, big band, rock, pop, and oldies were part of the mix last year, and will continue this year.
As for exactly *what* gets played... that gets plenty of influence from you guys. Your hall will get to submit song suggestions in the days preceding each dance, and I work very hard to make sure that the dances are made up of the music you want to hear.
If there's something you definitely want to hear, please be sure to bring the CD with you to Governor's School. However, keep in mind that songs need to be "danceable," and if the song would normally get an "Explicit Content" sticker, then chances are we can't play it.
I had a great time as the DJ last year, and am really looking forward to it again. Like a I've been working on the music for this year ever since last August... Edited by: Allocentric at: 5/16/06 2:35 pm

Whatever you want! The more creative the better!
Assuming you were looking for a more detailed answer...You can do any decade you want (I will most likely break out the 80s garb, b/c I love to dress like Jennifer Grey) or your favorite celebrity.
You can get ideas by looking at last year's Celebrity Bash or Decades of Stars in 04.
I'd make a link, but that would require too much thought and effort. I'll leave that for Jim or Sheryl.

I love Full House! I thought Uncle Jesse was so hot!
