Jogging Areas?
Will there be a place/time for jogging? Is there a gym available?

Re: Jogging Areas?
Most folks that go running do so on the path that goes around Westhampton Lake. It's not terribly long - only 0.6 miles - but it is a fairly nice and well-maintained path. Generally, the only time you'll have available is before breakfast, since you're going to be busy during the better part of the day and evenings. That besides, outside of the morning it can get too hot - dangerously hot - to be exercising outdoors. So, if you're looking to jog/run, plan on doing it first thing in the morning.

As for a gym... from what I understand there likely won't be access to one this year. In the past, there have been occasions (typically a couple times per week, and only during the Explorations/Recreations time slot in the afternoon) where Governor's School students were able to use the weight room / pool in UR's recreation facility (the Robins Center). However, I believe that access to that facility is still in question due to conflicts with other groups which use UR's campus while we're there. Basically, I wouldn't count on having access. Besides, going to the gym meant having to forgo attending the Explorations that occurred at the same time... and those are typically too much fun to miss!

In short, your best bet for fitness is to take in a morning run. Just please don't bring a weight bench from home... there's no space for it in your dorm room! ;)

Re: Jogging Areas?
What Jim said. The lake path really is a nice one; level, paved, goes over a foot bridge to an island gazebo. :cloud9 There is also a cross-country trail through the woods. With both trails, we do insist you travel with at least one buddy if not a small group. And both trails are off-limits after dark.

I can also confirm that the renovations of the fitness center this summer mean absolutely no pool access this July. No final word yet on the weight/exercise room, but chances are looking quite slim.

There have also been groups to organize yoga or pilates "classes" in the mornings. I've also had residents play tennis before breakfast.

And I second the lake idea...I love to run at UR...it's beautiful and there aren't too many hills, which makes it very appealing to me...and I usually end up running around the lake.

I was wondering if there was any final word on gym availability. For those of us committed to a workout schedule for sports, will we have enough time to stay ready for the season?

I think you should plan on not having the gym available. Even in a "regular" summer, you would only have access to the gym a couple of times a week. If you need to lift or exercise daily, you would need to create another plan anyway.

Talk with your coach and develop some strength training and conditioning exercises that require little if any specialized equipment. There is a turf field that when not in use by sports camps we are welcome to use. There are also grass fields and grassy areas that are accessible. Tennis courts, a basketball court, and a sand-pit volleyball court are also available during free time (if not being used by another group) and also during Explorations time reserved for us.

yes, as a former college athlete I can assure you that there are PLENTY of strength training and agility exercises that you can do with little or no equipment. Even just a couple of handweights will do. If you need to bench press, you can always use your roommates :lol

No idea on the length. The path runs in the area between the lake and the Greek theatre and tennis courts. (I know the campus map makes it look like those places are right on the shores of the lake. They are not.) In winter you can see the path when driving down College Rd. It is a wooded area which keeps it nicely shaded.

Oh right...i usually run through there...it's not very long..

There are lots of different roads you can take...I switch it up alot, run different roads, and then end up around the lake...you can wear a pedometer or drive your parents around on the roads the first day to get a general idea...

Thank god I found this post!
I'm missing my preseason for Cross-Country this summer and was curious about when/where I could run at Gov school. The path mentioned earlier sounds good...are there any other areas?

Re: Jogging Areas?
Really, there are lots of great pedestrian paths all over the campus. In the mornings (after 6:30am) you can go running anywhere on campus. We just ask that you always go with at least one other person (safety in numbers) and that you stay on campus. Basically, if you are seeing brick gothic style buildings, you are on campus. If you are running in the evenings after 8pm, you are more limited in where you can go - you'll get a tour of campus when you first arrive and the RAs will be pointing out the "in-bounds" areas.

Hoo-boy! Be careful out there, Jen. Back in March, I resumed running after nearly a month off, and successfully brought on an iliotibial band (IBT) injury on my right knee. I'm still trying to nurse it back to health.

Be careful out there.

I am prone to injury, but I'm doing a 1/2 marathon in 12 wks so I'm hoping to stay healthy until then, cause I can't afford to take time off....:shakehead ......I can't help but wonder what I'm thinking when I pay money for these things....:shakehead ...but now that I've paid, I'm committed! :rockon

Re: Jogging Areas?
maybe this has been asked already, but what about some simple free weights? not a bench or anything bulky.
