how to make herbal salves
Ok I tried to post this once some time ago and my computer ate it so here we go again. lol
here is what you need
1 cup olive or grapeseed oil
a domino size piece of beeswax roughly an ounce
1 tsp goldenseal
1 tsp comfrey
1 tsp echinacea
( if you have powederd that is fine just put it in muslin or cheesecloth)
one vitamin e capsule
several small jars
if you have a crock pot this works best if not you can cook the herbs on the stove on low
put your herbs in the olive or grapeseed oil and cook them on low heat over night, when it is ready strain your herbs and pour the mixture into a kettle on your stove add your beeswax till melted, then add the vit e capsule (it is a great preservative) it seems liek the beeswax isnt much but it solidifes quickly, pour into jars and leave the lids off till it cools completely.
Store in a cool dark place this will last for several months no problem. THis is a healing salve and can be put on any cuts , scratches what have you , I have had people use it to treat skin blemishes as well. it is very versatile.
happy cooking and blessings

Re: how to make herbal salves
I think this would be a perfect method to adapt the bug, sting, bite stuff with. I never thought about the beeswax and Vitamin E. I tried adding honey, as Shadeaux suggested, and that definitely did inhibit the mold growth. But, this recipe is almost identical to the one I posted, except mine has mullein in it also, and mine has no beeswax, oil, or vitamin E.
Do you think you could leave the herbs in the salve rather than straining them out? I mean, does the cooking get all the "goodies" out of them so that straining them out just gets rid of the graininess? Gosh, Ladifaire, now you have me thinking on this, and I'm very excited. As far as the olive oil, do you use virgin olive oil, extra virgin, or just regular plain old variety? I have several POUNDS of beeswax that was a gift to me several months ago. I am thinking somewhere in my mind I have read about some type of healing properties that beeswax also has, but I can't call it up right now.
A salve like this would be so much more convenient and less messy to use than mine is... Plus would keep a lot longer, I believe. Thank you so very much, Ladifaire, for this post! You got my brain spinning with ideas! (Well, that may or may not be a good thing! ) Okay, I will definitely have to try this out now. Gotta add olive oil & vitamin E to the shopping list now!

Re: how to make herbal salves
I have used good old dollar store olive oil and never had a problem, I have made a salve with jewelweed for poision ivy that works wonders, I think alot of it can be herbs of preference , it really depends on whay you are making it for, say for stretch marks calendula and yarrow with a dab of cocoa butter added to the mix is wonderful, my sister n law just gave birth and she swears by the stretch mark formula. I have used the basic recipe that is in the other post on nearly everything from scratches to cuts and I have even used it on my pets when they have gotten hurt, I dont think it woudl hurt to leave the herbs , I strain them one because of hte grittiness if you use powdered herbs and the other because alot of people that use my salve really dont like the pieces of herbs getting stuck in a wound , it is once again preference, if there is anything I can help with let me know, with several pounds of beeswax you can make a ton of salve . lol.

Re: how to make herbal salves
Thanks. I think straining it is probably a good idea.. I have used the "paste" stuff on our animals also (and any of the humans I can get to play guinea pig). It works. I made some with the honey in it and put it in the refrigerator as an experiment.. Shadeaux was right about the honey, no mold yet. So, that's good. We were given the beeswax back in April as a gift, and I just put it away because I didn't know what to do with it yet. I had the vague notion of someday making candles out of it or something...
But, I have been in my amateur herbalist mode for a while now, and I'm learning as I go along. We dried and powdered a lot of stuff this year, to include comfrey & mullein, peppermint, spearmint, and even some chocolate mint. I have a bottle of seeds to grow some ecchinacea next year also. We have been working on saving seeds for stuff like this. I have been putting together a book of recipes, like soap made from aloe & yucca. It's just something I felt I wanted to learn more about, so have undertaken it. Thanks again, and I'll let you know how it turns out.
I would also be interested in the poison ivy remedy..

One of my fav herbs for salves is plantain. Abundant, easy to find, fabulous for sores, wounds, insect bites, itchy stuff, rashes, burns.

I wonder if it grows around here? I'm glad you brought this to my attention. I'll have to look it up, then see if I can find some growing here (probably not until spring now). Thanks, earthnann.
