maintaining wooden sailing boat
Hi we are looking at an Alden 309 to live aboard and learn to sail in (coastal). Apparently it is in good nick. Assuming the timber is fine can anyone give an idea of the maintenance involved. We have heard such varying reports from becoming varnish junkies to turning into slaves to the boat. Is timber really that bad to keep up in sea water? We will do what it takes but feel we have a couple of things going for us - we have 3 full days a week to dedicate to maintenance and sailing (in whatever order) and we are both pretty handy with painting and minor repairs.

As a professional painter, on land I maintained a few swimming pools and it seemed to me that with the correctly specified heavy duty paint it was a case of cleaning and recoating regularly. Easy really. Listening to some wooden boat owners (and even louder critics) it would seem there is no such thing as a durable marine timber treatment? Cetol is amazing on land, does an equivalent exist in the marine world?

Thanks
