on raising power
this is from an assignment I prepared about raising power. I wanted to share it because I know that raising power is hard for a lot of people
On Raising Power

Raising power refers to the practice of filling the sphere of the circle area with energy. The generated energy is a combination of human and universal energy that when combined, focused, is then channeled then in accordance with Will for a specific purpose. It simply means gathering powerful magickal energy to put into motion and cause something to happen. In Wicca/Witchcraft it is often referred to as raising the cone of power. It brings together the energies of the participants into powerful resonance, before actual ritual work. A single practitioner can also raise this cone alone. This power is directed through concentrated will or wills to influence subtle planes of the universe, where it affects the physical plane again.
There are many ways of raising power the most common are:
Meditation, concentration, or rhythmic breathing. We tap into energies that have always been available to us, though we could have been not aware of. Mental discipline is also gained through cleansing the body which includes fasting over short periods and physical discipline like yoga practice which teaches endurance. The restraint of breath causes the lungs to contain an unusual amount of carbon dioxide gas and is one of the most important factors. Sitting for long periods in cramped or unnatural postures would affect the circulation and hence the blood-breathing apparatus. These, in turn, have influence on the brain and may result in trance especially if combined with meditation aimed specifically at attaining a state of trance. Actually the dissociate state called trance which is a dulling of the conscious mind is the perfect way to raise power and dances, drumming, music, and the rest are ways to reach it.
Chanting There are three schools of chanting in Wicca, one says that chants must be ancient words and phrases, almost inevitably in another language often hard to say and hard to remember. The second school allows translated chants, usually are complex small prayers. The final school is the simplest: chant anything that rhymes and raises your energies. The increase in power is done by increasing volume.
DancingIt is particularly useful in a circle situation and is a fairly quick method of power raising. Power raising dances combined with drumming or chanting tend to be simple, like holding hands and moving around the circle. The best way to let the power out is to stop suddenly, often by ending an accompanying beat, and shouting out a monosyllable while collapsing. Dances start slowly and build up speed. The whirling dervish technique with the head thrown back can sometimes also be used when dancing. Dancing can be achieved with shaking the head, the body and many other physically dynamic disorientating movements.
Drumming Not everybody drums well. Most people use a "heart" beat which they increase in speed and complexity as they raise the power. It takes practice. In circles it could be enough to use one drummer. When the power has reached its peak, the drummer stops, often voicing a monosyllable that pushes the power to its peek. Different monosyllables have special meanings in different traditions, but any monosyllable is acceptable.
Visualizations Visualizing is the ability to form mental images clearly as if they are actually happening. It comes easier to some than others and easier yet when practiced regularly. Visualization works with emotion to raise power. It acts as a lens to focus the energies on the desired target. If the image is weak or shaky the power is shaky too. Stimulating all five senses through visualization raises energy to its peak.
Words of power, affirmations, incantations, and invocations use the power of speech to strengthen the visualization and thus the power. Words vibrate and penetrate the veil between the worlds when spoken clearly with emotion and confidence.
Other Methods For Raising Power
Music: often accompanies drumming. It can be a simple melody played or sung, a second instrument comes in after the first, with a similar melody played above in counterpoint, a third in a lower harmony to the first, a fourth in harmony with the second, and so forth. The power raised and spells worked this way are intense, but require practice and skill. Harper Wicca, a musical tradition, uses this exclusively.
Tone Raising:is not as complex as music weaving. Tone raising is best done with at least one person with perfect pitch and a strong voice. Vocal vibrations are the essence of creating the cone of power through tone raising. The entire human body resonates sympathetically with the voice and other vibratory sounds
Sex is the sacred merging of the two great powers of masculine and feminine. It can be a most powerful way of raising energy. It raises energy from the base chakra to the crown knowing that raising chakra energies from the base to the crown is possible without sexual intercourse. During the sexual act, tremendous emotional energies are created and the cone of power can be generated by the "raising of the "Kundalini", or primal, raw, sexual energy. According to Tantric teachings, the chakras are the junction points between the dynamic cosmic plane of existence and the etheric level of the body. The lowest chakra, called the base chakra, is located between the legs. The next chakra, the sacral chakra, is parallel with the earth and all the other chakras except the crown chakra, located above the head. During orgasm, the Kundalini is activated, and rises through the shushumna, or central energy channel. It activates, realigns, and balances all the other chakras, charging and discharging energy. The sex act produces the required energy through a heightened emotional state. The practitioner must have sufficient powers of concentration to avoid interruption or distraction at the critical moment of orgasm.
Incense and potions which aid to release the Spirit The controlled use of drugs has played a part in most of the nature based religions. Shamans, as well as Native Americans have used hallucinogens to focus the mind and aid the process of shape-shifting. Wine, incense, essential oils and herbs also come into the realm of drugs (incenses also stimulate the olfactory glands in the nose). Some drugs are very potent and are to be used with caution.
Physical means of purification like use of the Cords or the Scourge The scourge is used in some forms of Wicca to produce energy from an object or to purify a person through mild pain. Flagellation is a common form of ritual purification. Salt is commonly used by witches for this purpose as is incense for purifying the aura.
Cones of power also are raised through cord magic. The Witches sit inside a magic circle and hold ends of overlapping or interwoven cords. As the Witches chant, either aloud or silently, knots are tied in the cords. Power is released when the knots are untied.
Any combinations of the above among other ways which work for you best is a good way to raise power. Of course there are many aids to that among which are not least intent, belief and purification.
It is important to note that conserving energy is very important in raising power. Spending energy that might be saved and employed in magickal workings makes you lose much power. Some of us waste energy in needless worrying. Other emotions that are destructive are jealousy, rancor, envy, self-pity, and depression. Some habits like smoking, alcohol, unneeded arguing, oversleeping, criticizing, complaining consume our energy.
Releasing the cone of power also called release, is right when the energy peaks and before it drops. it is tricky and requires a level of awareness and a sense of timing.
On the Use of Personal Power : it is not advisable to use personal energy for spell work. It can be damaging to your health, energy levels and psychic balance. It is much easier to raise the energy needed and ground out the excess, this way you do not create an internal imbalance. The excess of specifically raised energy within a circle is usually sent back into the earth by placing the hands on the ground and letting the energy flow back into the earth.
