witch sticks ?
I recently heard someone mention witch sticks as a tool of divination , any info on this? are they similar to oghm sticks that druids have been known to use?

Witch's Sticks
a.k.a
Saxon Wands
I came across these sticks when i first read Bucklands Complete Book of Witchcraft, and for those of you who have not read that book, I share them here today.
Excerpt from Bucklands Complete Book of Witchcraft
page 117
(paraphrased)
Items needed
dial rods - cut these into three of 9 inches in length, and four of 12 inches in length
Preparation
Use one of the 12 inch pieces of dial rod and decorate it very noticably different from all the others this is known as you Witan Wand, you may decorate them anyway you wish that you feel comfortable with
How to Use
Kneeling lay the Witan wand on the ground infront of you horizonally.
Close your eyes and holding the other one in your hands, mix them while concentrating on your question.
Keeping your eyes closed hold them in your dominate hand, with your off hand grab hold of one of the tips and after concentrating a moment longer open your dominate hand so the witch sticks will fall.
Now you can open your eyes.
Interpreting your reading
1. if there are more long wands than short on the ground then your answer is yes
2. if there are more short wands than long wands (not including your Witan Wand) then the answer is no
3. if any of the wands touch the Witan Wand the answer is very definite one, with strong forces at work
4. if any of the wands are resting on others than no deffinate answers can be given for forces are still at work
5. if all wands are pointing towards the Witan, the the querant will have a definite role to play in the determination of the question
6. if none of the wands are pointing toward the Witan, then the matter will be determined without the querant's interference.
A few notes:
Please remember that these are divination devices, as with your tarot cards and such they need to be charged, and should not be used by anyone other than yourself. Also as with your tarot and such keep them wrapped in a cloth I prefer a black or red silk.

The Saxon Wands.
There are three of equal 9-inch lengths, Four of equal 12 inches lengths, With one of the 12 inch being marked or decorated to make it stand out. This wand is termed the "Witen" wand. After placing the Witen wand horizontally on the ground in front of you, With eyes closed and the question firmly in mind Concentrate for a while whilst moving the other six wands through your fingers. Now with your right hand take hold of the tip of one of the wands and hold it fast. Letting all others drop onto the placed Witen wand below.
The answer you are seeking is then foretold by the positions of the wands on and around the Witen wand.

Saxon Wands
The Saxon Wands are very good for obtaining a direct, prompt answer to a question. In a way they are similar to the Oriental I-Ching, though far less complicated.
Seven wands are needed. These are made from wood dowel. There should be three, each nine-inches in length; and four, each twelve-inches in length. One of the twelve-inch wands should be marked, or decorated in some way, as the Witan wand. Actually, you can decorate all of the wands with runes and symbols, if you wish, but make sure the Witan wand stands out from the others.
Kneeling, lay the Witan wand on the ground before you, horizontally "across" you. Take the other six wands and hold them out over the Witan wand. Close your eyes, and holding them between your two hands, mix them together while concentration on your question. Keeping the eyes closed, grip the wands in your right hand (left hand if left-handed); take hold of the tip of one wand with the fingers of the other hand; concentrate for a moment longer on your question, then open your right hand. All the wands will fall to the ground except the one held now by the fingers of your left hand. Open your eyes.

(i) If there should be more LONG wands that short wands on the ground, then your answer to your question is in the affirmative.
*
(ii) If there are more SHORT wands than long wands on the ground (excluding the Witan wand) then the answer is in the negative.
*
(iii) If any wand(s) touch the Witan wand, it means the answer will be a very definite one, with strong forces at work.
*
(iv) If any wand(s) are off the ground (resting on others), circumstances are such (forces still working) that no definite answer can yet be given - regardless of (i) or (ii).
*
(v) If all the wands point towards the Witan wand, then you (or the person for whom you are asking) will have a definite role to play in the determinations of the question.
*
(vi) If none of the wands point towards the Witan wand, then the matter will be determined without your (the Querant's) interference.
As with the Crystals and Tarot Cards, do not let others use your wands. They are your personal instruments. It is recommended that you keep them in a black cloth for safe keeping.
