wizard pets
After re-reading PoA, I was really amazed by Crookshank's intelligence. He befriends Sirius, and apparently Sirius is able to convey to him his desire of catching peter/Scabbers. Even before getting to Hogwarts, though, Crookshanks makes a couple attempts at Scabbers that, in light of his later behaviour, could be interpreted as some sort of understanding that this rat was not a "good" rat. The post-owls too are pretty amazing, with their ability to find a person even if the sender does not know where that person is.

Is there ever any explanation given for the unusual talents of animals used by wizards as pets?

Magic. ha ha ha.

Honestly...that is an excellent question. Owls are just really smart predator birds.

And Crookshanks, of course, isn't really a cat. He's a Kneazle (did I spell that right?).

Half-Kneazle I think
The Kneazle is a very nice entry in the school book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I read it to the boys last night, the 10yo immediately knew that crookshanks fit!

I don't think post owls are genetically different than other owls, but the more professional ones may have received some training. Poor Pig seems to have been a "wild" owl that took a liking to postal service? I think there is no cannon explanation anywhere.

Still waiting to see what Trevor the Toad can do.

Counting down!

Re: Half-Kneazle I think
I have the magical beasts book, ejeana, and I checked to see if the blast-ended skrewts were in it. Nope, they're not. I think the beast book was published before the skrewts were introduced into the series. Maybe there'll be another edition.

And I think Crookshanks is only half Kneazle.

While we're on the subject of pets, I was half expecting Ginny's Pygmy Puff to become the tribbles of Hogwarts! After all, she did buy the thing in a joke shop!

Re: Half-Kneazle I think
The reason the Blast-Ended Skrewts are not in the Beast's book is bacause they are a illegal cross bread. It's against wizard law to cross bread magical creatures without consent I believe, and I doubt Hagrid had consent. I can't remember what species the skrewts are from, or if it even said. Hagrid only had like twenty to begin and then I believe they started killing eachother off, and then Hagrid was left with only a couple if my memory serves right. So I doubt they would ever make it into "Magical Beast's and Where to Find Them".
